Colonial Nations and Annexation

Hi all,

I've only played one campaign thus far, and I don't know if what I'm talking about is a bug, but it doesn't seem right. Sorry if someone has asked about it before, I did a search but nothing like it came up.

Anyway, playing a campaign as Sweden, I watched Germany conquer Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. Instead of these nations being annexed, however, they simply "became" their colonies. By this I mean that, after 1940, Belgium and France were African nations, while the Netherlands was Indonesia.

Is there no way for the computer to differentiate between colonial and national provinces? It seems more approriate IMO that, if Germany conquers all of the French heartland, they should gain control of the colonies.

Maybe I'm not understanding correctly, but I thought I'd bring it up.

I thought that it was fairly close to IRL; Vichy gets Algiers, but Syria and others are Free French - Indonesian Dutch colonies can trigger war with Netherlands, but annexation of Holland+ provs doesn't give Indonesian colonies, etc. Belgium has a couple colonies in Africa (?) - they remain Belgian.

The only way for the Germans to get the Indonesian Dutch holdings (very juicy!) Is to diplo-annex them, which nigh-on impossible. As it should be!

Well on the one hand it DOES seem correct that the population of these colonies should remain, for example, "Free French", but I don't think they should have the same capabilities of a "normal" government. I don't think the Dutch, once conquered in Europe, began building a/c and ships in Indonesia and committing them to combat in Europe - did they?. France has bombers attacking Germany from N. Africa (albeit unsuccessfully) and I think this "African France" is one reason why Germany hasn't touched N. Africa. That particular problem might have happened just because I didn't get the Vichy event for some reason - but still... Netherlands, Belgium and France have all been conquered in Europe and yet they all still have functioning (and in some cases, rather strong) militaries. Is this right?

As Germany there is an Event to create Vichy, they may turn it down (think something like 10% if AI), same goes for France they might accept Vichy or decline (same 10% for ahistorical choice), that could be the explanation to why you still see France in Algier.

Well, the way it is now simulates the real history rather well. Germany rolled over mainland Belgium, but never landed any troops in Congo.

Remember, that by occuping provinces (not even annexing them) you gain control over all IC, manpower and resources there.

The current model is thus fairly accurate
