As well all sit around the TV on Wednesday night, and turn to SVT 1, we see a familiar face, Alf Åberg! What does he have to say?
Part II -
As you were told in the last episode, Denmark-Sweden was at war with France and many of the states within the Holy Roman Empire. Why? The previous decades Denmark had won many victories in the northern parts of the Empire, currently occupying Holstein, Bremen, Oldenburg and Hinterpommern. They had also wrestled Prussia and Estland from the iron clad hands of the Teutonic Order. Therefore, Christian II had many enemies. The emperor, Karl V, had sent several letters to Christian, telling him to cede his german territories back to their dukes and bishops, or the Emperor would take them back.
Now, the second enemy, France, why did Denmark-Sweden pose such a threat to the French? In the 1500’s, More than half of France was in English hands. Denmark-Sweden was at the time allied to England, and the French were most likely not so thrilled at the idea of a strong Denmark-Sweden in its back. It is known that the French king, François I, had hopes of help from the Habsburgs against England, therefore, France attacked Denmark-Sweden.
Next episode, learn why Christian II should beware the written word.
