STORTINGET

This is the Storting where you can discuss the policy of Norway, talk on related issues, conduct propaganda, say your protest against the government and other things that would disrupt the development of the main thread. Note though the main purpose of this place is to bring through your ideas and make suggestions without being in cabinet.

Stortinget is the name of the Norwegian Parliament. The constitution states by § 49 that "the people exercise the legislavite power through the Storting, it consists of two departments, a Lagting and a Odelsting."

Norway have a parlamentarian systen, meaning the King must choose his advisors amongst individuals accepted by the Storting, and that they must resign should the Storting distrust them.

Through the elections of 1934, the Norwegian Parliament consists of alltogether 150 representants: 69 for Labour Party, 30 for Conservative Party, 24 for Liberal Party, 1 for Farmers' Party, 1 for Christian Democratic Party, 1 for Society Party, 1 for Labour Democrats and 1 for Liberal Left Party.

As a loyal Workers Party member, I issue my full support to the current government and the leadership of Johan Nygaardsvold. However, should issues of disagreement occur, I will not be shy to speak up here in the storting.

I may also present proposials to the government on behalf of myself or from people and organizations in Sogn & Fjordane.

The leader of the Venstre Party, Johann Ludwig Mowinkel, stood up and began a speech.

Gentlemen! As we all know, the annual meeting of the governement happened recently. The conclusions delivered by the ministers are not surprising; however, that does not mean that they satisfied our requests. As always, the members of the Labour Party are lobbying the interests of the working class, instead of making decisions that will advantage the entire norwegian nation.
Of course, the workers shall not be disregarded. They are the backbone of our economic power. But what whould they be if there were no ingenious, work-liking, risk-taking businessmen who invest money in order to make production increase and economics expand? What would they be? Most probably, poor peasants or fishers, scratching the dirt until exhaustion every day, only to get just enough potatoes not to starve.
Only thanks to the investments of the private sector the brave Norwegian population is spared from such a disastrous fate. Only thanks to the investments of the private sector we do have electricity, radio broadcasting, modern infrastructures and one of the greatest merchant marines in the world.

But now, the private sector is not going well. The great depression was a very harmful injury for all of us. Everyone had to make the best he could to get through. Of course, many workers lost their jobs. But would it be better if the businessmen kept them until the end, making the firm sink, so all its employees would lose their jobs?

Now the tempest is behind us, we need to look forwards instead of complaigning about the past. Give the private compagnies means to expand themselves, and you will see how fast the unemployment rates sink. To do so, there is only one oppotunity: sink the taxes! Remember, what the governement doesn't get today, it will get it tomorrow, for lesser taxation rate means more growth, more growth means more profit, and more profit means more taxe income as well as more welfare! As you can see, businessmen, workers, governement, everyone's pleased with that system. So why not make it real?

Future of our Nation

As the reports from the goverment tick inn, I and my conservative friends are getting more and more worried about the threats facing our brave Nation.

To out east there is communism, to the south there are National Socalism. We need to join the democratic Allies lead by The United Kingdom and France to get the protection we need against hostile and Autocratic(?) ideologies.

Aswell as protection do we as a free nation have a moral duty to support thoose who stand together against the threats that democracy is facing.

So i beg you, my fellow representatives, support mye proposal that Norway should do whatever we can to join the Allies. For Norway and for democracy.

As already comrade squalleke123, we shall work on a fair and social society, where no one has to hunger and all have work. Communism its not the peoples enemy, but there is an enemy which is named Nazism! And we have to evade this threat at all costs.

And all those who think that the USSR makes up a danger for our country, I say, that as long the buffer zone Finland stands between us and them and we remain neutral in any conflict, there is nothing to fear. I think that no one of us want a war.

I see with much concern that many distinguished people committed themselves to the cause of Interventionnism, arguing that our nation need to join one of the great military alliances. Such a stand can only be, either the most dangerous of mistakes, or the most contemptible of treasons!

Remember history! Norway remained neutral during the whole Great War. During four years, while the european nations teared themselves apart with a ferocity incredible, and while the blood of their youth flooded the devastated plains of Flanders, of Picardy, of Lorraine, the citizens of our nation could continue to enjoy a quiet and peaceful life. Why should we change a strategy of national security which served us well and protected us from the greatest threat that a State can face: war?

But let's see the results of the World War. What brought it to the nations which were involved. The answer is easy to find:

-DESTRUCTION

-CHAOS

-DEATH

Now, answer me. Do we want the same for our nation, which was spared from all these horrors until now? Do we want it?

The Venstre as well as all true patriots of Norway say: NEJ!

Let the so called "Great Powers"(I would call them: the Great Fools) play to their disgusting wargames, made of hatred and cruelty, of blood and tears! And let the brave Norwegian nation enjoy peace in our quiet little Homeland. Alt for Norge!

Stop the panic! Of course, our country must prepare itself to every opportunity, but that does not mean that we have to spend the entire state budget in armaments! For now, the international situation is stable. Don't forget that we have a formidable tool to avoid wars, which is the League of Nations. I'm pretty sure that thanks to that institution, any conflict will be solved by negotiation, not by the force of arms. But even in the most improbable case when the League should fail, we will not be a primary target. Germans hope for revenge on the French, who humiliated them with the Versailles Treaty; the Soviet Union wants to restore the greatness of the former Russian Empire, but they haven't any kind of claims of reclamations on our country. At least for some years, a war seems very unprobably and so it's a full waste of public money that we all give to the state by paying taxes to produce huge amounts of weapons and ammunition! A military budget and a defense improvement programm are good things indeed, as they protect us from the external threat, but if you spend too much for it, it will only be good for some industrials and not for the whole Norwegian nation!

Let's limit the growth of the Military budget and make investements in more profitable sectors of economy. I suggest to low the taxes in order to help little businesses to expand, and to build new, modernized infrastructures through a large public/private cooperation on national scale.

Johann Ludwig Mowinckel is right. There is no need to arm our selfs. We should concentrate on expanding our economy and improving the bad infrastructure in some places.

LAW PROPOSAL​

I hereby raise a suggestion for a new law to further promote our neutral policy. In order to promote neutrality I believe in showing the world we are a peaceful country, which by no means intend to wage war, nor see any need to threaten other nations military. If there are no armies, there can be no war. Let us go forward with a good example for greater powers to follow and limit the government to a maximum 10% spending into military!

Effects of Law*:
- move one step towards dove lobby
- budget get a lock on 10% spending in military funds

I see with much satisfaction that the demands of my party are followed. A military is unfortunately necessary for each country nowadays, but we have to put a limit in order to serve the interests of the people, and not those of some greedy industrials and warmongering maniacs. 10% looks like a reasonnable limitation to my eyes. So I say "JA" to this low!
