They lost a cruiser and four fighter planes as far as I know. One of the invasion fleets sad they were the British coming to help, so the coastal artillery ceased fire.

Erm.

I haven't seem the main reason stated clearly - that with the planned British-French occupation of Norway, the plans for which have already been obtained by the Abwehr, Germany would face strategic encirclement from Greece in the South to Norway in the north. Sweden was also quite likely to be bullied by the Allies to abandon neutrality with Norway in Allied hands - and that would mean complete loss of iron ore and safe waters for German ships in the Baltic Sea.

This was all the more real since a few months before, during the Winter War, the Allies were going to provide support to Finns in a very strange way - by landing troops in Norway and walking through Sweden and the iron ore mines, shutting down both shipment and production. Scandinavian neutrality prevented this plan at the time.

French & other ore was not a possibility at that time; nobody expected Germany to utterly crush France and obtain a free hand with regards to Europe and its resources.

Shame on you. The defenders of Oskarsborg deserve descendants with better memories. The Germans lost 5,000 men, 10 out of 20 destroyers, 3 out of 8 cruisers, and their 3 capital ships were put out of action for the rest of the year - which left Germany with no navy at all to even contemplate invading Britain or interfering with their operations in the Channel.

Naturally, but the way the question was asked, it was about what Germany lost, not necessarily to Norwegian fire.
