1492-1513 from a Brandenburg perspective
The beginning of 1492 was a period of hectic diplomatic activitity among Brandenburgs neighbours. Alliances were formed and several wars broke out. One of Brandenburgs diplomats, knowing we would need help in such an hostile environment, asked Holstein, Pommern, and Mecklenburg if he could join the alliance that they had recently formed but was turned down! This made their plans all to clear!
However, before they could put their evil plan against Brandenburg into action they were attacked by Poland. Brandenburg decided to use this oppurtunity and in march 1492 Brandenburg joined Poland and their allies in this honorable war against Brandenburgs hostile neighbours. Pommern was quickly run over and soon Vorpommern fell into the hands of Brandenburg and Hinterpommern in Polish hands.
Brandenburg now turned towards Mecklenburg and Holstein but just as they were about to be crushed Poland, as leader of alliance, signed a peace treaty which stated that Vorpommern should go to Brandenburg and Pommern be made a vassal of Poland.
Brandenburg decided to honor this peace treaty but the threat from Holstein and Mecklenburg remained, a situation that could not be tolerated forever. In january 1499 the honorable Casimir was appointed general of the army of Brandenburg and with his special skills a plan was quickly developed. The people of Mecklenburg and Holstein were to be liberated from their warmongering kings and incorporated into Brandenburg. Early spring 1499 the plan unfolded and the brilliant general Casimir quickly reached his objectives. With minimal losses Mecklenburg and Holstein were annexed and Brandenburg also managed to secure a sizeable naval fleet. The future looked bright.
The hostile attitude of Holsteins and Mecklenburgs former leaders prior to the attack was not known elsewhere and after the two annexations diplomats from all over the world informed Brandenburg that further war against other kingdoms might drive Brandenburg into a conflict wider then they could handle. Brandenburg therefore decided to enter a period of peace and consolidation despite the great unjustice southwest of Brandenburg, the province of Hannover, since long known to be a Brandenburg core being ruled by another king!
Brandenburg decided to abide it´s time and three prosperous years of peace followed. In may 1503 however all hell broke loose. Austria decided to attack Saxony and her allies Hessen, Würzburg and Hannover. Soon all of Brandenburgs neighbours were under siege by austrian forces. Brandenburg, highly offended by not beeing informed about the emperors reasons for this attack nor his objectives, quickly sent a diplomat to Vienna with the following content: If anyone is going to liberate the people of Hannover it´s Brandenburg. The emperor in Viennas response to this was: "If you do that I will crush you".
Brandenburg could not believe the emperor of Viennas words and decided that the response must be a joke. The emperor simply had a bad hairday, the gossip in the Brandenburg court revealed a story about a misplaced wig but that is still to be confirmed.
Therefore, in march 1504, Brandenburg declared war on Hannover and its allies and an army under the command of General Casimir quickly entered Hannover. As expected the emperor of Viennas threat had been just empty words. The Austrian forces sieging Hannover greeted Casimirs arrival with joy and with Casimirs special expertise the fortress soon fell. As the soldiers of Austria and Brandenburg cheered their common victory a messenger arrived from Vienna. The cunning French had decided to attack Austria while they were busy up north!
The Austrian army quickly marched off to face this new threat. Casimir, willing to join their cause, had to be held back from the king in Brandenburg. - "Casimir, if you follow our austrian friends to fight the french, who will secure our borders? We are still at war with Hannover, Saxony, Hessen and Würzburg and so is Austria. Defeating those nations will be your mission and thereby you will secure both ours and Austrias provinces from attack. You can do more for the people of Brandenburg and Austria here then in France".
Casimir reluctantly agreed and a number of staggering victories against Austrias and Brandenburgs common enemies followed. In october 1504 the province of Würzburg was conquered and annexed and in june 1505 Sachsen was captured from Saxony. Total victory was at hand but Casimir still felt depressed. Horrible news had arrived from Vienna stating that the Austrian forces had faced a humiliating defeat against the french.
-"How could this happen? I should have been there to help my austrian friends! Together we could have secured german supremacy in europe for good".
Things were about to get worse for Casimir however, much worse.
In september 1505 Austria accepted peace with France and Franche Comté and Artois had to be handed over to the french. The defeated austrian forces didn´t have to wait for their emperors orders, they knew what had to be done. Quickly they marched northwards to help Casimir with the final operations against Austrias and Brandenburgs common enemies.
The emperor in Austria had other plans however. The defeat against the french had put him in a state of temporary (?) insanity and in may 1506 the entire HRE was astound. Austria had declared war on Brandenburg! No demands were given prior to the attack and the emperor of Viennas word to his generals was simple:
- "I dont care if the people and soldiers of Austria and Brandenburg consider themselves to be brothers. I dont care if Hannover is a Brandenburg core, it belongs to me! Furthermore we must restore Austrias reputation as a victorious army and what prey could be easier then the small and warexhausted kingdom of Brandenburg? Crush them for me!".
The austrian generals were amazed when they heard the emperors order but dared not oppose him. His erratic behaviour was well known after the defeat against France. Rumour has it several generals were executed for expressing their proffesional opinions, different from the emperors, on how they thought the french should be defeated.
Reluctantly the austrian generals spread the emperors orders to their troops. However the generals fears of a revolt among the soldiers against the emperor when they issued the order proved wrong. The defeat against the french had "fortunately" destroyed not only the emperors, but also the soldiers ability to think...
The massive austrian army attacked general Casimir who could not believe his eyes! Our friends! In Hannover we fought together and proved unbeatable and now you are back to fight us? Brother against brother? Casimir had no other option then to put up a defense but the pointless bloodshed of the lifes of Brandenburger and Austrian soldiers finally overwhelmed him and he ordered a retreat. That however wasn´t enough for the austrian army who took up the chase and cowardly cut Casimir down from behind. Thus ended the story of the finest general Brandenburg had ever known. Much too early I might add, he had great plans for Brandenburg but what those were we will never know.
With the loss of general Casimir the soldiers of Brandenburg lost all hope. The Austrians quickly overran the entire kingdom of Brandenburg and slayed Brandenburgs army to the last man.
The emperor in Vienna smiled when the news of his armies victory arrived. His generals, unsure what to do next asked the emperor: -"Now that we have followed your orders and slayed every last soldier in Brandenburg, what are your orders?". Despite his total victory the emperor now made a new chaotic turn and decided to be merciful. -"Tell them that we want Würzburg".
The news of the emperors demand caused quite some confusion in Brandenburg. Würzburg? You mean that province down south that Casimir secured when Austria was busy in France? Offcourse you can have it, we never wanted it. In fact we tried to give it to the emperor as a sign of good will months ago but the diplomat we sent to Vienna was cut down at the gates before he could deliver the message once the guards found out where he came from. Orders from the emperor apparently... "All that is Brandenburg must be exterminated".
The warexhausted people of Brandenburg cheered when the Austrian invaders finally left Brandenburg. Now is our chance to restore our broken country and economy.
That was not to be however. With Brandenburgs army reduced to zero men every nation with bad relations to Brandenburg decided to have a pick at our crushed nation. First the coward italian alliance of Tuscany, Genoa, Modena and The knights attacked followed by an attack by Denmark, Helvetia, Swabia and Baden. Without an army there was little to do for Brandenburg. Ducats had to be minted and a new army set up. As of 1513, one by one the sieges of Brandenburgs provinces have been lifted and all invading troops have been defeated. At a high cost I might add and without monetary
contributions from some friendly nations war would probably still go on in Brandenburgs territory, those contributions will be remembered. As general Casimir once stated: -"To survive in this troublesome time you have to know who is your enemy and who is your friend". If Casimir had followed his own advice he would still have been alive today but in Brandenburg noone thinks less of him for it. How could he possibly have predicted what was to come?
Despite beeing utterly defeated Brandenburgs enemies refuse to accept peace and the war exhaustion of the people of Brandenburg is reaching dangerous levels. With Denmark under siege it is our belief however that a peacetreaty might soon be possible. If not Brandenburgs armies will go on for as long as it takes.
Once peace has been restored, what are Brandenburgs alternatives? In the northeast Sweden and Muscowy are rapidly expanding their territory. In the southwest France has proved both her willingness and ability to wage war and in the south the emperor in Vienna is pondering his next erratic move. Will Brandenburg be able to rebuild it´s country before it is attacked again?
At the same time rumours have spread about the discovery of a huge new virgin continent far to the west across the ocean. Perhaps that is where the future of Brandenburg lies? Only time will tell.
