The thread was meant to imply that having vassals should be made way more attractive than it actually is.
I agree in being more attractive I disagree with the stick idea you had. I think the carrot would be better.

Your Original post encourages the player to go vassals by threatening the player with no levies. This encourages players trying to maximize levies to exploit something else. Unless a carrot is also provided another thing is simply going to be exploited.

Honestly I would be some what ok with levee having demneshing returns going over demise limit. If their was also a way to boost levees gotten from vassals. For example maybe having martial trained rulers able to increase the levy % given from vassls based on the martial stat with default 0 bonus being 10 in the stat so the strong martial rulers generally have stronger armies. This discourages NK mode because vassals then start giving more troops then default NK would provide.

This already happens, you get bonus levy from personal holdings based on your martial skill, meaning if you have low martial it may be better giving the title to someone with high martial.

- A Holding owner's personal martial skill now affects the levy size (exported as HOLDING_LEVY_SIZE_OWNER_MARTIAL_BASE and HOLDING_LEVY_SIZE_OWNER_MARTIAL_MULT)

Nope, the OP wasn't about the levy change.
Simply bring back the evil_events.txt as it was before 1.10 (The events that now happen when you go into deficit ) regarding going over demesne limit.
..or as the OP/Arcvalons stated, just make it far less attractive to have no vassals.

Mabye PDS should see if it would be feasible to introduce an optional sandbox mode as some games had in the past, so that all sandbox loving people can do so if they wish.
Then everybody could be pleased. Could be a DLC as well.

Why anybody would ever want to use NK mode is beyond me. I just don't understand it. You may as well not play the game at all if you're going to make it so ridiculously easy.

Some people just want to win. They don't want to get outsmarted by the computer, they don't want to have to spend hours trying and possibly failing to be able to 'win' the game. They just want to win, and frankly with this sort of mode, the idea of winning is to WC, or come as close to it as possible.

Okay. But hows about we try the carrot instead of resorting to the stick at every opportunity?

The emphasis always seems to be on *PUNISHING* players for playing a certain way by taking things away from the player. Why must the answer always be punishment?

How about rocking everyone's world and *REWARDING* players who play the "correct" way?

I know...an absolutely mind-boggling concept...

The problem with this is...two-sided really.

I've often had discussions on SWTOR and STO about how free players are 'punished' by having reduced abilities and options available to them, and that if they want to be able to use said things they have to pay.

But then someone goes "But they're not being punished, their being rewarded. By choosing to pay, they're being given something they lacked."

Some people will see punishing as rewarding, and some people will see rewarding as punishing.

Achieving World Conquest is easy, just open the console and go nuts. I have not problem with people cheating in single player.
But when I see strategy discussion posts where someone suggests, jokingly or not, to a new player that they use NK Mode in order to get the result they want, that's how I know NK Mode should be nerfed out of existence.

NK is used because vassal levies are nerfed. So vassal levies need to be unerfed above all.
I think at least 60% of people on the forum agree with that.
Everything is balanced or not relative to each other. Buffing one option is also nerfing anything that is exclusive to that, and likewise nerfing one option is buffing every opposed option. It's all interrelated.


You have the ultimate control over this "mode" -- ff you don't like it, don't use it.

Shocking, I know, but still absolutely true.

A game should be balanced on its own; it should not rely on the player choosing to not play optimally.

I find it sad that people need externally enforced rules to keep them from doing things that they don't think they should do.


Most of the "solutions" I've seen to discourage people from playing "the wrong way" in CKII have ended up narrowing the possibilities and taking sand out of the box for everyone else.

It's not fair that the sandbox prohibits me from inventing gunpowder in 867 and getting musket-armed line infantry. I'm being so railroaded! In fact, if my playstyle is inventing aircraft carriers I should be allowed to!

You don't seem to understand the mind-bogglingly obvious concept that punishing one playstyle and rewarding an opposing one are the same thing. Every action has an opportunity cost. Buff one thing, and that makes all the other options weaker... it just doesn't feel like a nerf because the nerf is hidden in the opportunity cost. But on an objective level, it still is. All options are balanced (or not) relative to each other.

If every levy, merc company, holy order, retinue, and event troop was multiplied by ten, none of them would be buffed.


Why would one nerf NK-mode when it is entirely up to the player to use it? I think mercenaries and retinues need a major nerfbat, until they are, I avoid using them. I have never thought of NK needing a nerf? Why? Because it is a nonobvious exploit of the game mechanics that only the player would do, and it only has the effect of reducing the game to repetetive button clicks. It has no depth, no purpose, and gives no experience. I am the type of guy to like spreadsheets, but repetetive button clicks for no other purpsoe than exploiting game mechanics is not my definition of entertainment. It is kind of sad when we must deliberately avoid using game mechanics that automatically win the game, but those are still things that people like to use, and why should they be deprived of it?

Again, a game should be balanced on its own merits and not rely on people playing poorly to have depth. If the most advantageous option lacks depth, then a game's mechanics need to be tweaked. And yeah, if people prefer NK mode, it should be possible... but it should be an extremely weak play with serious downsides.

Does anyone happen to have the snip of code that was in the pre-1.10 version? If not, then I will be making a tiny mod to reintroduce this into my personal game and likely posting it for anyone to use. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Drat...I just started replaying CK2 after a nearly 2 year hiatus, and I had the game installed on a computer to play without using steam...meaning I just deleted the version (pre-1.10) I am now hoping someone still has...

Somebody made one for the PB mod once. All you need though is the evil_events.txt and maybe opinion_modifiers or event_modifiers changed as well, but i'm not sure.
Could get you a download for these if you want. PM me if so.

Nevertheless, i'd be more happy if they fix it officially in the game somehow or/and introduce a sandbox mode (maybe also as a base for a tutorial, but that's another topic), even though unlikely.

Some people just want to win. They don't want to get outsmarted by the computer, they don't want to have to spend hours trying and possibly failing to be able to 'win' the game. They just want to win, and frankly with this sort of mode, the idea of winning is to WC, or come as close to it as possible.



The problem with this is...two-sided really.

I've often had discussions on SWTOR and STO about how free players are 'punished' by having reduced abilities and options available to them, and that if they want to be able to use said things they have to pay.

But then someone goes "But they're not being punished, their being rewarded. By choosing to pay, they're being given something they lacked."

Some people will see punishing as rewarding, and some people will see rewarding as punishing.

All I'm saying is that instead of taking things away from the player, instead of nerfing NKM, maybe buffing Feudalism is the answer.

I don't use NKM myself, it's not all that much fun to me, and players are losing out on potential council Members by not having vassal.

But if you're going to nerf, and nerf, and nerf, and never buff, all you do in the end is piss of your customers, and they'll vote with their feet.

Also, NKM would never have become so popular if the levy nerf-the nerf to feudalism-which you all say is the "Proper" way to play-hadn't been so harsh.

Buff Feudalism, and maybe NKM won't be so popular...

PS: comparing a Grand Strategy game that we all paid the same for to get to Two-tier games with limited choices in the FtP option isn't exactly the best way to make your point...

In my opinion, an elegant solution would be the following:

For every castle you directly own other than your capital, you need to appoint a character as castellan, which basically means they'll hold the castle under appointment sucession, but you get full levies and taxes from them despite your crown authority laws. You only get to appoint a number of castellans equal to your demesne limit minus one (for the castle you control directly), so additional castles are effectivelty not garrisoned, so they provide no levy and no taxes AT ALL.

It's not an issue about not having self-control, but having vassals is such a core part of the game that it's silly it can be avoided at all. It's not abour nerfing and reducing options, it rightly shouldn't be an option at all, else might as well have a "conquer the world" decision that gives your character all the world.

Somebody made one for the PB mod once. All you need though is the evil_events.txt and maybe opinion_modifiers or event_modifiers changed as well, but i'm not sure.
Could get you a download for these if you want. PM me if so.

Nevertheless, i'd be more happy if they fix it officially in the game somehow or/and introduce a sandbox mode (maybe also as a base for a tutorial, but that's another topic), even though unlikely.

I don't need nk mod to conquer the whole map,I can do it regardless of my starting position,who I play with ;whether I play republic,muslim,christian,or pagan it doesn't matter.Nerf hammers don't hit me.That said multiplayer is an entirely different issue and I can't comment on that.

I don't think nk mod should be nerfed more heavily.The pure maintenance cost of raising your super huge demesne troops is a decent punishment itself.Your economy is in ruins,all sort of thives guilds,highway robber bands are all around your counties.And not to mention if you go bankrupt you can't even declare war.Now I am not saying that most of those penalties can be negated,if your sole aim in the game is to keep conquering.I don't see nk mode as an issue but rather it is just an another management style and it's up to player how to play his game.

Well all i am asking (can't speak for others) for, is to have something (just like the old variant of thieves etc) appear as soon as you are over your demesne limit.
So that you at least get some feedback from the game, some impression that this is wrong.
I don't see how having thieves guilds make it impossible to play in NK.
As far as i remember NK mode was 'discovered' before the changes to the evil_events.txt file and its effects in events_modifiers.txt.

I didn't detail how but to be able to banish someone you need vassals,if you aren't conquering you won't have new vassals to banish.If you are conquering sure you will have new vassals to banish and fuel the warengine.But how much over the demesne limit are we talking about? How many demesne troops are we talking about here? Because the more you are over your demesne limit,more penalty you will have financially and your demesne troops will cost more since they will have been increased in size.For instance in my current campaign my demesne troops of 36k costs about 86.7 gold or something,I have a healthy income of 103.2 k.(I am sultan of africa and egypt.) I mean no offense but I have been playing the game for long and know all sort of stuff so if I want to play exclusively nk mod in a campaign I am sure I'll do it quite properly and don't need anyone to teach me that :) I have and can manage much more complex playstyles during my many campaigns in this game such as always managing 0 decadence when playing muslim even with many adult siblings and sons and grandsons.Most people here fail that.

As in the original NK thread i meant baron level vassals.
PS: No, my earlier post wasn't intended to be condescending, just said this in case you just banish all vassals, including baron level ones without reinstating new ones.

An alternative to NK mode is boosting your diplomacy skill/attribute to ridiculous levels through the console, add a lot of prestige and piety and your vassals won't cause any trouble whatsoever.
Add money to buy mercenaries and you're set.

I don't know why(probably because deep inside I am a totaliter tyrannical control freak) but I primarily thought I would hold all the titles within the realm including barony tiered titles hence the thought that we'd need new vassals to banish.Since we'd be getting wrong holder tax penalty added for holding bishop and major titles I imagined how then would the economy be fueled.When I briefly played nk mod at some occasions that's what I did actually.I had no vassals naturally,I held all the titles.I guess that makes it nk mod plus or something.

Then if you guys hold only the counties and leave barony tiered vassals alone then yeah like Iron chariots mentioned one should be doing ok economically.

About the topic,if nk mod should be heavily penalized I think a good precaution the devs could take would be to reduce demesne levies as you go over the demesne limit.Someone here already suggested that I suppose.Another alternative would be to add events like which your capital would be stormed and you'd be trampled to death or get lynched by a mob of angry peasants?

Or perphaps an event that a leader of highway robber band usurps the title of a county you hold,instantly becoming your vassal and a (disgruntled one at that).Since you can't be administrating them all (the excess demesne counties) they could be grabbed by some vagabonds and declare themselves counts(maybe becoming instantly independant or immediately declaring independence war on you.) Such events would also refrain the player from going nk mod imo.

Anyway like I said earlier it doesn't matter for me devs can nerf it to oblivion or even boost it I don't mind but just wanted to throw in some ideas if it must be nerfed.
