In all fairness, the boundaries of the U.S. states were just the boundaries of the British colonies that preceded them. It's the British colonial charters, not the U.S. government, that placed the borders where they did. It's all actually quite historical.

That's what he meant. While European colonization of the Americas began less than a century after the 1445 start, England didn't begin to set up colonies on the west coast of North America until the early 17th century, about 150 years after the start of the game.

Unless I've spectacularly misunderstood what you two are talking about.

I suppose that is probably what he meant. Either way, it makes the most sense to me to put the boundaries for uncolonized provinces that will inevitably become European colonies (and are designed specifically to become European colonies) somewhere around where the colonial powers actually placed the borders.

They are designed to become European colonies. The historical boundaries are wherever the colonial powers actually put them.

So this isn't like someone wanting to place medieval European boundaries so it's easier to get the boundaries of World War II Europe. It's most like making sure the kingdom boundaries of England and France end up somewhere around where the actual boundaries of England and France were during the renaissance

You wouldn't want Normandy to share land on both sides of the British channel, would you?

You may notice that this province is in three parts. For some reason, Delaware has decided to conquer parts of New Jersey and Maryland.

Dont forget Virginia, its called the Delmarva Peninsula for a reason. Plus it looks like some parts of PA were taken, albeit very little.

Historically it was the other way around. New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware are a mess.
Historically they are rebels as Delaware was a Pennsylvanian County before statehood. Before being a PA county it was a Maryland county.

I guess I now live in East Delaware on the Delaware (River). At least there will be no sales tax.

My grandmother would drive 2 hours to go shopping in Delaware because she didn't want to pay sales tax. She would drag me and my cousins along a lot. I do not have very good feelings towards the state as a result. To me is represents a boring drive followed by carrying bags or useless junk around for hours followed by another boring drive.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY BELOVED UNAMI!

*Sob* you were once such a pretty province, so perfectly placed as a base of American expansion... and now... now you are RUINED! That hideous shape is just... just... Blergh.

Actually, though the shape is, um, misshapen it seems to be connected to all the same provinces as before (with the possible exception of the PED taking Delaware, which deserves to be suspended for 50 games; I don't remember off the top of my head if you could walk directly between Unami and Delaware in EU3). The only real difference in North America that I've noticed (and I only noticed it just now) is that apparently Connecticut is land-locked. ...? Not sure why that happened.

It is time for us (aggrieved former owners of Delmarva land) to reconquer our sacred peninsula. Bob McDonell will be our El-Cid Campeador!

Frankly, if we're putting a member of the coalition in command of the united army, I'd go with Chris Christie, ruler of New Jersey. He's surely the most aggressive warrior of the lot. He also has a lot at stake -- he's lost Atlantic City to the invaders. Ouch. Stick McDonell and O'Malley on each flank. Both of those guys are better organizers than bloodthirsty commanders.

No one likes Delaware.

As long as we don't put our glorious governor O'Malley in charge of anything, I am fine. I am not sure about his military power bonus, but he's administrative is like -4 :)

The game province's territory depends on many factors, such as number of neighbouring provinces, population, isn't it?
P.S.
My home region was included in one of these ugly Georgian game provinces.

As a native of Michigan, the way Paradox has Michigan named and split (why not just split at the peninsulas?) hurts my eyes. Fortunately, this game is focused on Europe and not Michigan. :p

In the North-East US, it's not just shapes that don't entirely fit the colony. IT's that a cursory look at the province name and history files make it abundantly clear somoene at the Dox was paying zero attention whatsoever when they did that part of the map. Conoy, Pocumtuk, Mahican, Mohawk, Connecticut, Narragansett all refer in their history files to city FAR outside their territory.

The culprits are Mikmaq, Abnaki, Massachusett and Narragansett, each of which extend much too far westward, pushing everyone else back. There is no reason for them to expand this far away: they would still have roughly the same number of borders if they were relatively realistic (the one change in number of borders would be that Manhattan and Narragansett would no longer be adjacent). Nor would the size be particularly bad, except maybe Narragansett which might be a little small (but probably no smaller than Manhattan already is).

What make it even worse is that the shapes and names make it excruciatingly clear that they WERE working off the shape of most of the states by and large (ie, they imported the shapes from EU3). They just couldn't be arsed to look at where those shapes actually belonged on the new map projection and threw globs of color around without a care.
The result is immensely disappointing.

As a Marylander, I shall feel offended. It is time we, citizens of Maryland, repel those Delawarean invaders :)

As a fellow Marylander, I second this. For too long we have had to deal with the oppression of Virginia and Pensylvania. And now even Delaware, one of the smallest of states, gets some of our land? It's an outrage! (See below.)

But seriously, Conoy could have that Western part, at least.
