I get that the Norse should be much stronger than the kingdoms in the south of GB, given that OTL their Danelaw kingdom took most of England. But it's just too extreme: their forces outnumber what the Catholic rulers can throw at them about 4 to 1. It makes trying to play a non-Norse British ruler at that start date an exercise in futility, and usually leads to a Norse empire swallowing up all of Britannia. I'm not saying it should be unlikely for that to happen, but I am saying that it shouldn't be as likely as it is.

Also, any suggestions for how to beat the Norse as Wessex or Mercia with the game as it is? Try to avoid engaging for several decades' of wars until the special event troops have run out?

It's funny because if you are playing as Norse it's the exact opposite- other than the preset Sons of Lodbrok invasion, I've never gotten enough troops to have a prayer of an invasion happening.

I'd say do what the AI always does and invite every other Christian King on the map to the war and attach them all together to form a doom stack- and I mean every single one. Even those 1 province Irish kings will add up.

I find that at least one if not both the Viking invaders usually convert to catholic anyway. If you can survive the initial event troops try to send some missionaries

And Byzantium and Rome each sends 10k+ mercenary or holy order on a large fleet to carry them quickly.

Prepared invasion never worked out with me. By that time, everyone on Scandinavia should be my tributaries and forced to send 100% of their levy to answer my calls.
