I normally swith between Tyr and Snorta for the tech bonuses and for the discipline.

Just did the achiev starting with Gotland as capital with the three island principalities of Björnholm, ösel and Äland , fairly worthless clay, fairly easy game. Naval superiority was extremely important for the first time. As an added bonus, Denmark acually invaded Great Britain

I might have forgotten something, but how do you go Norse? Also I can't see that For Odin achievement in the achievement file.
Thanks. Knew about the CK2 conversion, but that obviously wasn't it given there apparently is an achievement for it.
I am not sure a conversion would let you get access to the achievement but that is indeed the other way, perhaps the better way, to get Norse as a religion. Sadly you can't convert otherwise, which is fair enough historically.
I use Snotra when I know I will get 3+techs within 4 years(saves 30 points/tech).
I don't think I'd use Njord until end game when trade income can be incredibly high. But then I don't usually play til end game.
Tyr is for winning wars, if I know I will need that extra edge
Odin is when I know I will have to core a lot.
Tor is never used, I don't rely on forts and when I need generals it's usually when someone died and it's hard to predict it.
Freya is for recovering after a difficult war. Usually with a lot of loans to pay back

The achievement is purely for custom nations. Conversions are mods and thus break achievability.

For the For Odin achievement, I tried following the strategy on the wiki but got annoyed at England DOW on me early, and in the games I managed to get allied with France it suddenly broke of the alliance despite +120 relations and no shared border.
My new strategy is based on the discovery that if you do random new world you can get High American tech group for free. This means you can start colonizing immediately in the area and if you pick your location right there can a bunch of minors you can annex, but there are usually a couple of high american empires generated as well. There is also the difficulty of getting into Europe as well. In this strategy the best one is Njord, one needs extra money to pay for the coloniser until you get a few more provinces.
In my current game I was slowly winning a war against Britain when Sweden (allied with France) declared war for the my danish provinces and the League (a large High American republic) declared war on me as well. I'm a bit screwed now, while I can probably defeat any one alliance I can't beat all of them, and I share a border with Commonwealth who inherited Muscovy. I won previous war by having the best navy which allowed me stop them landing troops in my homeland but the fleet can't be everywhere at once and if I split it up then it won't be strong enough to win battles.

In my For Odin run, I used Odin all the game. Because I started off by conquering natives, and then colonising and then doing them both together. Since I wanted First Come First Serve as well, all game was about coring.

Some interesting experiences/successes/mistakes from my run:
Random new world, lots of water, islands in north, continents in south. I owned almost all of it.
Peaced Spain out of wars by 1) giving up wargoal Flores and a CN
2) releasing Protectorate Ayutthaya. They were a distraction and I didn't appreciate them piling on.
End game was a struggle because Sweden was allied to blobbed Brandenburg and huge Poland/Lithuania. I could handle either but not both together. Took Danzig from Brandenburg in one war and released it as a vassal. Then in another war gave it up to Poland. D'oh! I just allowed them to form Commonwealth.
Got out of a Commonwealth war by releasing returning some Sweden cores. Ming had exploded and Sweden was in Coalition along with Chinese Minor. Declared on them to get war vs Sweden without involving Commonwealth/Brandenburg. Twice.
At end of game connected empire across northern Asia. But still had 75% autonomy because Capital was London (no land connection).
Custom ideas included discipline and morale; and was running four military policies at end. Thanks to Religious, Exploration, Quantity, Quality.
