Hey everyone,
I have just been trying to get the For Odin achievement lately and have been trying out the different deities but never really settle on one only as they all have merits.

I tend to use Tyr and Freya a lot but am always severely tempted by the others as i hold no convictions those two are always the best, especially Freya. What do those of you who have experience with the religion tend to choose?

I mean I honestly loved both Snotra and Odin during my run, helped save a lot of monarch points, but honestly they are all really good, especially if you can play as a republic and switch up more on the fly

I love these choices, it's hard to choose a lot of the time. I find myself going with Tyr alot, that discipline is so nice. Odin is also great because anything that saves monarch points is... Thor can be great, especially if you have ideas that can stack with it, and really kill in battle. same thing with tyr's discipline and quality or offensive ideas.

Freya always sounds good but i don't think those bonuses are worth choosing over the others available most the time.

Odin and Tyr are good all game long. Thor is insane early game. Snotra can be good every now and then when you're gonna build a bunch of buildings and tech once or twice in a reign.

Norse religion combines super well with republics. It's kinda gross to be honest.

It's always best to be a republic, you can't get marriages from other feudals because of religion, so theres really no downside to a norse republic

yeah, Odin and Snorta is probably the best, as they save you monarch points ... with Tyr a distant 3rd as that discipline might be critical in a war ... Tor is frankly somewhat weak, and Njord/Freya is probably only worth it if you is in a situation where you're not going to core something soon or tech up for that matter, and is using the extra cash to hire stronger Advisors, or expediting something else

but really, thats a secondary question. the most pressing question when wanting to do For Odin is, where do you plan to start? the Achievement is often done together with First Come, First Serve, for the reasoning that when doing FCFS your location means that Christian is rather useless, and Islam aren't much better. And that For Odin really is easier if you're growing strong somewhere where you aren't to close to strong, hostile heathens

My opinion is that +5Discipline is stronger than the chance of getting a slightly stronger general

Your opinion is unfortunately, provably incorrect.

+1 Shock means that you will always get an extra +1 Shock on top of whatever you roll. So you always get a better general, not a chance of a better general. 1 Shock pip is easily worth more than 5% discipline, especially in the early game where Cavalry are about 5 times better (offensively) than soldiers (though they still take the same damage).

The exception to the rule is where you would have rolled a 6 in shock, then I believe it rolls over to the siege roll. But a 6 shock general being randomly generated is incredibly rare at the start of the game.

Coring cost is the way to go, no matter your religion or start. The military gods pale in comparision simply because monarch points are the lifeblood of the game, and coring costs in the current build are incredibly high. Dont pick Odin and you will likely find yourself behind in Admin tech, and thus in Military Ideas, which are better than any of the military gods

As a republic, the Norse religion can really shine by changing your Deity as needed.

Tor is extremely usefull for recruiting good generals, +1 shock is absolutely beautiful and you should stack your generals to the limit as long, as you've got Tor

Tyr is your Deity of war, for when you already got great generals (from Tor)

Odin saves a lot of paper mana while expanding, especially with coring cost reduction ideas and/or administrative ideas

Snotra allows you to build more buildings after having stored enough money and can save you a considerable amount of mana, when chosen at the right time

Freya might be good for faster recovery from a hard war

Njord is probably good, if you want more money and have got a good trade setup



I tend to use Odin the most.
Tor about every 50 years, when I need good generals again
Tyr for wars against players or strong AIs

Unless i get employed by Paradox (or start earning a living by steaming), EU4 is a game, not work which i have to have 110% focus on

The most pressing question when wanting to do For Odin is, where do you plan to start? the Achievement is often done together with First Come, First Serve, for the reasoning that when doing FCFS your location means that Christian is rather useless, and Islam aren't much better. And that For Odin really is easier if you're growing strong somewhere where you aren't to close to strong, hostile heathens

I've been attempting this for a few weeks now, and i've never made it more than 50 years... I start in England. Controlling York to London, with York being my capital, cause of Jorvik.

I get an alliance with France that ends up being worthless everytime... They can pour a 40k stack into Dublin, but if i need help they suddenly forget how to use their ships... Then england and scotland ally (ridiculous), and i get gang raped. I had one success almost, but i took so much land from England in my victory i had a coalition war declared on me immediately afterwards... The whole endeavor is really starting to frustrate me, it just seems impossible without restarting 1000 times.... And how satisfying is an achievement when you've had to start a game 1000 times to obtain it? Seems like it'd feel the same as save scumming.

Aren't you very vulnerable having just london by itself?

Lubeck was my 2nd choice for a starting province, since it's always a pain to conquer, and it's so valuable for trade...

I really feel like the UK is a safer start though, if i can just get rolling i feel like i could be unstoppable once i get most of Englands land. Those islands are just too complicated for AI to land troops on.

And that's the primary reason why you start away from Europe ... to give you time to build up an unresistable force to come knocking, instead of sitting around within the wisp nest hoping that they don't declare you tasty before you can fight back without support

The general opinion is start in America ... ideally in Central America having spread out among the coast provinces so you're in touching distance with both Inca's and Mayas (and at length Aztec), so you can claim and declare on them ...
