Whats the real difference between choosing these options? Would choosing normal still give me a plausible outcome on the map after playing it for couple centuries?

Well in AGCEEP, if you select historical the AI will pretty much act as they did in real history.

Normal will allow for more ahistorical event choices and therefore less plausible outcomes.

They're both as big a challenge, if you ask me.

How historical is historical?

Hi guys,

I just wonder about how historical the historical option in the options menu actually is? Been in my second AGCEEP game now, checked historical in the options menu but somehow all my games go pretty unhistorical even without me directly interfering.

In my first Muscowy game, France started to overrun England around 1550. By 1630 they had conquered all of England and Scotland except Anglia. (english capital) The English did not manage to get back their lands. Not that they desired, but instead focussed on expansion in India / America.

in my second game as Milan now, France was smashed between England, Burgundy and Spain by 1500 and never came back (it is 1620 now). There are a few french small states but France seems gone. This time the English hold 50% of France by the way. Just the other extreme compared to my Muscowy game.

So I wonder - how "historical" is this option really? I supposed that the game would actually feel like world history with the exception of my deeds which would influence it into one or the other direction. But obviously that is not the case?

The historical option is only directed to the AI's selection of events. In this case it means the AI will always select the top choice (choice A), which is the historical one. When using the normal selection, the AI have higher probability of selecting choice A, but choice B, C etc can also happen. Finally, the random selection is... well, random. :)

So this setting can't guarantee that the AI expands "historically".

Historical event choices will still create a pretty historical game, especially with the treaties etc. Still these events are all contingent on AI performance, so even getting screwed over by history an AI England can still win the HYW (rarely), radically altering the time line.
