Ah, a promising start. But remember, by getting a strong Norway you are changing history, so I wouldnt call it cheating if you roleplay certain situations, like perhaps like expanding your cores into Sweden if you win wars etc.

The political situation of Europe at the time when the campaign started

As you can see, the city of Trondheim is highlighted in the frame. Though Oslo is the capital, Trondheim was the capital of Norway when the Wealth of Norway first rose, at the end of the Age of Vikings, in the year of 1066.

Thanks, Galleblære.. I know you want to see a strong Norway.. so do I..

Some cores on Sweden could be nice.. at least on Västergotland.. as it covers part of Bohuslen, that in fact was Norwegian until 1658..

And isn't EU2 about changing history.. ;)

Good luck, have you tried Norway before?

Yes, I played them a looong time ago..

it was my first game.. so I guess it is 2-3 years ago..

it turned out well.. I colonized larger parts of Nort America, and almost finished off Sweden.. Denmark was taken down quite early.. I also got some provinces in Russia and Germany..

This time I'm playing at VH F, so it won't be so easy..

The far western part of the Norwegian "Empire"..

Though we only control two pitiful trading posts, and don't find Vinland on our maps any longer.. The chief advicors in our kingdom has a strong feeling that a huge continent is hiding behind the white.. The best cartographers of the nation claims that they see traces of foreign coasts at the end of the map..

maybe our ruler should send out some ships to investigate this..?

For some reason, the natives living outside our trading posts at Greenland, are Norsemen.. Though they are pagan savages, they are Norse.. hopefully our ruler will send out expeditions to make christians out of them..

quite funny that they look like Indians.. maybe they've adapted to the customs of the original natives?? still I find it hard to believe that they can endure very long in the harsh climate, by only wearing those long brown pants..

The Western seas, and our most important colony, Iceland. From here, many expeditions will be sent. Though it may not be the most populous island, it is quite populous to be an "ice"-land..
to the far east parts of the motherlandcoast can be seen..

For some reason, a gigantic ice-shelf is floating south of Iceland.. I guess it can be explained by that it is january.. it will probably melt during the spring..

Norgesveldet - The Wealth of Norway

Is the name of this AAR..

Directly translated, I think that "velde" in Norwegian, should be "wealth" in English (correct me if I'm wrong)..

Still I believe that the meaning of these words don't completely correspond to each other.. In the Norwegian word of "velde", lies the meaning of both empire/country, and wealth/estate. A better translation might be "Norgesveldet - "The Empire of Norway".. but while this translation maybe is more accurate, it doesn't say the same as "wealth"..

Since I also want to build a strong economy, I decided to stick to the first, "wealth", instead of "empire".. (besides, it also is a more direct translation, linguistically..)

Historical background

The EU2 description:

The kingdom of Norway, united in the Viking era, reached its greatest strength in the 13th century, when Iceland and several islands in the North Sea were still under Norwegian rule. However, after the ravages of the Black Plague in 1349 and 1350, the population in Norway was greatly reduced. The Norwegian nobility was greatly weakened by the catastrophe, and became international rather than national in its orientation. In 1397 Norway entered the Union of Kalmar as Queen Margrete became queen of Norway following the death of the last Norwegian king Olav IV. Together with the other two nations, Norway was at war with the Hansa in the 1420s and gradually succumbed to Danish influence and rule as the taxes from Norway were spent abroad. The Norwegian 'Riksraad' continued to elect foreign princes as kings including Christopher of Bavaria and finally Christian II of Denmark. By this time, the Union of Kalmar was just an empty name and Norway had become an integral part of Denmark

I can add something..

Norway was during the Viking Age (about 750 to 1030/66) divided into small kingdoms and chiefdoms. Harald Hårfagre (hår fagre = beautiful hair), gathered large parts of what is now southern Norway under himself about year 870. The following decades different small kings and chiefs fought for control over resources. The Norse also set sail to far coasts, ravaging England, Ireland and northern France (Normandie). The Danish kings were always a threath to the Norwegians, and large parts of the southeast was often under Danish "jurisdiction"..

Olav Tryggvasson (son of Tryggve) established Trondheim (then named Kaupang and later Nidaros) in 997 and made it a head quarter. His sucessor Olav den Hellige (the Holy) attacked Norway and tried to christianize it about 1030. He was killed by pagans from Trøndelag (EU-province 258) in 1030. After that several kings had limited power. Harald Hardråde (the hard ruler) attempted to conquer England in 1066, but lost to Harold, who was promptly defeated by William the Conqueror only days later..

Until 1130 things were quite relaxed, but then the period of civil wars came... the archbisop-seat was established in 1153, giving some prestige to the nation.. The man Sverre Sigurdson and his descendants fought against the church and their candidates until the early 13th century, when the seed of Sverre established the new royal dynasty, that was going to establish the Wealth of Norway. His grandson Håkon Håkonson reigned as king for 40 years, and during his time Norway was secure, wealthy, populous and strong.

His son Magnus Lagabøte (the Lawgiver) made the Country-law in 1274. At his time Norway consisted of modern Norway, Swedish Bohuslen, Halland, Jemtland, Herjedalen, Idre/Serna, and also of Iceland, Greenland, Faroe-islands, Shetlands, Orkneys, Hebrides, and the Isle of Man. It was quite big, and stronger than Sweden (which at the same time was expanding in the east).

Here is a picture, showing both the landborders toward Sweden and the "imagined" seaborders that goes besides Scotland and Ireland. The area inside the green lines is the Sami/Lap tax-land, where Norway, Sweden and Novogorod contested the rights to take tax (mainly furs) from the Sami natives living there.

Later, in 1349 the Black plague arrived, and about 2/3-3/4 of the population was wiped out.. The population of 1348 might have been about 500 000.. the lowest point was reached at the middle of the 15th century (when EU2 starts), and it might have been about 150 000.

Chapter I - A Fallen Empire

Part I - Introduction

The glory of the Wealth of Norway when it was at its peak in the late 13th century had been lost for a long time. When the seed of Sverre Sigurdson had ended in 1319, the country went into union with the Swedes. Only 30 years later the Black Death ravaged the country and two thirds of the population died, among them most of the nobles and Norwegian clergy.

The disastrous Union of Kalmar started in 1397, without real recognition from the Norwegians. From being the strongest nation in Scandinavia around 1300, Norway was reduced to almost nothing around 1400. Sigurd Jonson acted as the administrator of the realm, and when Christoffer of Bayern (a Kalmar union king) died in 1448 many Norwegians wanted Sigurd as king.

In this story, however, Sigurd became king, and his descendants ruled Norway and reestablished its greatness.

January 1st, 1419:

In the royal chambers at the Akershus fortress, the realm-administrator, Sigurd Jonson held a meeting with what remained of the Norwegian nobility and clergy. They decided to centralize the government, rise taxes, especially in the capital, and promoted a taxcollector there. They also decided to lower the wages for the army and navy, since the treasury of the Norwegian crown was all but emptied. To do more, Sigurd also ordered a loan from a rich noble family. The loan consisted of 200 ducats. With this money taxcollectors in Trøndelag, Jemtland and Bergenshus were possible to build too. The rest were spared for future action.

This is the domestic political situation of Norway at this dark time

As you can see, people were spread throughout the realm and relied much on themselves. Taxes were low, and as a result, the crown had almost no influence.

Part II - Expansion Plans

The Norwegian councel also shared their expansion visions among each other. They decided to unite all Scandinavians under one banner (the Norwegian lion).

Later, when the reformation came, they decided to unite all protestants too, though this happened 100 years later, for convinience sake, these plans are also presented in this post.. ;)

As you can see, there are different colorcodes:

Heartland of the Wealth of Norway
Scandinavian areas
Protestant areas - in the future (and possible protestants)
Natural allies (also an insight into the future)
Expected enemies

It should be noted that many areas of the Wealth of Norway shown on this map in fact don't exist as independent provinces in EU2.. (such as Orkneys, Svalbard/Spitzbergen)

Hey, I'm trying to link to the whole thread, not just the first post, how do I do it..?

Look at my signature..

Edit: I think I found out.. but how do you remove the code-text..?

You mean like this?

Norgesveldet - The Wealth of Norway.

It's

*URL=http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4799866#post4799866]Norgesveldet - The Wealth of Norway.[/URL]

But replace the first * with a [

another way to achieve this is by using the options above when you create a new post, it's the insert hyperlink option, below the colour option.
