I'v heard good things about that one myself, but not read it yet

Other good books by Hopkirk are:
- Foreign Devils on the Silk Road: The Search for the Lost Cities and Treasures of Chinese Central Asia fascinating like an adventure book;
- Trespassers on the Roof of the World: The Secret Exploration of Tibet which puts you in the mood of the Great Game era too, but is a bit boring.

I don't think, that there are any Valentin Pikul's books in English but they are really good! Especially novels «Moonzund», «Chest' imeyu» (I have the honour) and «Bitva zheleznyh kantslerov» (The battle of iron chancellors).
«Moonzund» is about Russian Baltic navy during WW1 and revolutions.
«Chest' imeyu» is about destiny ща Russian secret agent during second half of XIX and WW1.
«Bitva zheleznyh kantslerov» tells about diplomatic part of unification of Germany, attempts of Russia to revive Blak sea navy back after 1856 and how these events are intertwined.

This suggestion is much "lighter" and is a fiction book:

"Fall of Giants" by Ken Follett. It examines the decisions made and the political intrigue in the lead up to and during WWI. It also looks at the Russian revolution and the circumstances that brought the US in to the war. Told from several different perspectives, from the Welsh miner to the German diplomat/spy. I really recommend it for a good read.

For Manifest Destiny, the Mexican-American War and all things James K. Polk, I'd suggest A Country of Vast Designs: James K. Polk, The Mexican War, and the Conquest of the American Continent by Robert W. Merry.

The Rise & Fall of the British Empire by Lawrence James starts two centuries in advance of Victorian era, with the British colonisation of the Americas, but the latter half is dedicated to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It makes the interesting argument that Britain's imperial acquisitions were actually a sign of decline and weakness, since before, the British were able to control those territories through informal empire - exerting influence via proconsuls and missionary networks - but, as the other Great Powers began to catch up, the Empire was forced to annex swathes of Africa to maintain control of their markets and defend them against outside influence. It really explores the colonialist mindset and reveals how the pace of expansion was set and why it became necessary for the Great Powers.

Indeed, a fantastic book, but it's rather long (which is how these things should be of course).

Anybody know of any good books on the scramble for Africa?

King Leopold's Ghost is reputed to be very good as well. I have a copy of it on my bookshelf I'm trying to find time for.

Just picked up The Great Game by Hopkirk and the Siege of Krishnapur on the Kindle.
Enoying them both. Also found, for free on the Kindle, "Tent Life in Siberia" which is about exploring the region for a telegraph system in the 1860s. Good period flavor also.

Almost any of the Alistair Horne books dealing with France during the period and Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August for when it all came crashing down.

"Pacific Century" by Borthwick.
20th Century East Asian history but the first 1/3 of the book is dedicated to pre 20th c and the 20th century stuff reflects on the past quite a bit.

Anybody know of any good books on the scramble for Africa?

Hannah Arendt devotes a part (100-150 pages) of "The Origins of Totalitarianism" to a imho brilliant analysis of "Imperialism" mainly focused of Africa (but also on the pangerman and panslavic movements). Of course this makes you realize that even if you play the decent HM's government of UK, you're still laying the groundwork for totalitarianism, when colonizing Africa, which might not excactly put you into the mood.

Also the political game, i.e. ideological struggle, positioning and debates between "radicals" (communists/anarchist) "liberals" (democrats in the modern sense) and "reactionaries" (monarchists) is portrayed brilliantly in the authorship of Ivan Turgenev - especially Father and Sons and Virgin Soil and The Devils/The Possesed by Dostoyevsky.

The First World War by Hew Strachan and the Great War 1914-18 by BH Liddell-Hart are very good. On a more individual level the Flashman series of novels by George MacDonald Fraser give a lot of insights into the issues of the Victorian world, in addition to being a highly entertaining, well written and researched read. The Flashman novels are not politically correct, so if you are easily offended by the social attitudes of the Victorian Age then you might want something less in your face. However, if you are not PC then they are terrific reads IMHO.
