Im fairly new to the game, and I've already completed two games, as Austrailia and Canada. I've been trying to play as Russia, but I seem to be getting my ass kicked by Germany.

I don't have enough units ofcourse, but how many units/divisions would it be good to have ready when the war starts? How many units in each province?
I aimed at getting at least 12 infantry divisions in each frontline province, and some more in reserve. Then some tanks. think I had 11-12 divisions.
Didn't think about getting units up in Finland aswell so they just walked right into my territory :)
My problem is that I don't know, how much is a lot, and how much is too little :D

I saw that the German Airforce kicked my ass. I only had 8 divisions of fighters which i thought was enough, but they had 30-40  . Generally i spend a whole lot of IC on research and not that much on production. Im kinda scared of falling behind in the techrace and getting my ass kicked because of it.

I don't have to build that many ships do I ? Russia doesn't need ships all that much?

What do you do if you get to war with Japan?
There's just so damn much terrain to cover, to prevent the enemies from running right past you :)

I need some help and good hints on how to start playing as Russia.

How many tanks divisions, infantry divisions and airplane divisions do you normally have?

Im using C.O.R.E v.0.82 :)

Well first off, don't worry about your navy for a few years, you have alot of options that are convieniently land connected to you. Second, I would recommend having at least 50 more divisions than Germany. That being said, I would never stop researching land, arty, tank tech and land doctrines. Just get basic air superiority fighters and that will be enough till '43-44
Keep them in groups of 6. If you have two groups of six and station them near eachother on intercept, that should be enough to slowly take down their airforce. (rember to have leaders with them, tahts a must!) Try not to re-base them as that cuts down on org.

Always make sure you have at least generals commanding units. rember a lvl 2 Field Marshall is better than a lvl 3 General.

Attack from multple directions as often as possible, it gives you a nice benifit. Avoid attacking over rivers.

I usually start out with 3/5 of ICs available for tech or production on tech and the other 2/5 on production till '38 then switch to 50/50.

If you want a good time to invade germany, wait till they are almost at Paris and strike. Their border will be under defended and you should make good gains.

Hope that helps!

By 1940, I think you should have close to around 160-180 Infantry divisions and 20-40 Armoured divisions. Spend most of your research on Electronics (It will decrease the time it takes to research others and helps A LOT!), land techs, and some air techs, that includes the doctrines. Forget about a navy, unless you make a daring invasion of Rostock with 40 armoured divisions!

*edit*

You should have about 20-30 divisions in each province bordering the German front and just defend and push as much as possible. On the borders of the minor countries, just put 9-15 Armoured divisions in each province and slaughter the minors.

How much IC do you have in total? approximately?
You get all of those more industry events, but im afraid that I might run out of ressources :/

20-30 ! :D omg im way off then :) better start producing those extra infantry units right away then :D

If I start producing tanks right away, won't they be outdated when the war begins? Im guessing it will take rather long to upgrade them.
But thanks for the replies, I will try it.

More hints would be much appreciated.

Im kinda confused by the upgrade button thingy. Don't your units upgrade themselves or do you always have to upgrade them when you research something new?

If you start early, you should be able to reach Improved Medium Tanks by late 1940, allowing you to upgrade/expand your armoured divisions by spring. The Basic Medium tanks are almost as good though, as long as they have a comparable tank gun. Historically, there was a huge difference in the effectiveness of a BT-5/7 and a T-34/41, but that won't really be represented in the game if you give the BT-5/7 a 70mm gun.

Im kinda confused by the upgrade button thingy. Don't your units upgrade themselves or do you always have to upgrade them when you research something new?

There are two types of technology upgrades: those that immediately upgrade your units (most infantry/artillery techs and a few in the other groups), and those that require you to upgrade a unit in order to feel the effects. These second type of techs are represented by (U) in the tech tree, like:

Arm: Ground Defense +2 (U)

i don't build my tanks at the start. I build my infantry and maybe some MOT-A units as mobile defense units. I wait till i get at least basic tanks (40mm) before i start building them

Another good thing to do, if you don't want to deal with tanks you could always have more Motorized or Mechanized units than you would have tanks. That would pretty much be more manpower than firepower.

I beat Germany in 40 with just calvary divisions, around 400 by the end of the game. It was the hell of it. I just made massive atack 40 against 10 and when there was tanks I encircled.
Although this game was just for kicks, I would use the massive MP pool to your advantage, and attack hard and concentrated.

Also about Japan, In CORE there's a bi-monthy? event that puts you at peace with them, unless you choose (or they) to go to war, usually 9/10 times, Japan keeps this agreement,

...Or you could just put six units in Vladivostok, and 3 units in each of the provinces east of Irkutsk that borders Japan's northernmost provinces. They are no threat at all to you.

well, when i play as sovjet, i try to have atleast 15 inf div at each frontline area, then 30-60 in reserv. i dont have that big airforce, atleast not in the start,
you should focus on inf tech, art tech, industritech, and the things for army, forgot whats those are called now. but anyway. lots of inf, then get maby 2*20 tank div and just counter attack the germans when they break thro, best way is to encircel them and then destroy them slowly. that way u can fast destroy all their off power. i dont think you should have any navy at all. those ships u got in the start u can use to help u a little in the baltic against the germans. in the east, you can just put like 2 inf in each area and the jap will not easly breakout, u should have some extra in reserv there to. and about finland. attack in are conquer it when its the finnish winterwar. even if it take u some extra time and man power u can free something like 20-60 divs. atlest thats what i do, and then u got a big reserv force and should be able to halt the germans and later push them back. Infantry/Cavalry and fighters is all you need to HOLD the Germans. Fighters will lose the majority of battles but your generals will gain experience and you'll stop his airforce from decimating your troops. Once his airforce is neutralized, you can start probing his defences for weaknesses. Use cavalry for exploits. By this time, you should have some great armor techs and artillery techs done. Build armor/mech and waltz across Europe. Go for Germany's allies. They are the weakest point on his defense.
