Like some other players I have specialist domes, one of them is the education dome (nursary, school, university). I need non-specialised workers across the colony (including the education dome) for working in the diner and grocers, the problem is that unless I micromanage them they all sod off to university. Am I missing something (other than the droneworker breakthrough)?

Thanks

While you still have Earthborn, no. After you are Martianborn only, don't have services in education dome. Ban children from all other domes if you haven't already. Will be low comfort but you don't care as they are not working. Can use slice for retirement apartment.

For me bigger problem is that I constantly have to keep track if I need any more specialists because university will just produce randoms when none are needed.

As somebody already described on these forums, solution is to just not care. Have anybody work anywhere, take performance hit which is easily recuperated with fewer buildings eg not building university at all.

Optimist in me says all this is deliberate as devs figured out that, after first game stumble, we'd set up things and then have nothing to do but watch.

Disable your unviersity for a while, let your unspecialised pile up.

You do not have to set the university dome to prefer non-specialists, but you have to set it to reject other specialists.

Simply open three shifts in university, count how many resident living spaces required and just build enough living quarters for that number (small dome it’s 2 universities, 3 living quarters, 1 service wedge)

Also you should build university dome when you have more than enough colonists for the current colony’s labor needs

This. If your university is pulling people from jobs you are doing it wrong.

The filters for the education dome is +child -senior, -specialists (except medics and non-specialists which is set to no preference)

I have two full nurseries with the school and university running on three shifts, The non-specialists that I want to work within the education dome are the ones being pulled into the university as soon as there is a space.

Thanks for the advice.

It’s better to split the university dome, senior dome and kids dome using small sized domes. It’s easier to count the living spaces, easier to set filters, also lower maintenance.

You do not have to set the university dome to prefer non-specialists, but you have to set it to reject other specialists.

Why?

The reason I ask, is because my Universities are filling up with specialists, if I don't reject them in the filters.

I didn't expect it to work that way, and assumed specialists wouldn't even enter a University.
I was wondering if any one else is experiencing the same thing.

Once formed, specialists stay within their dome if they have a house slot and go in any job slot if they can find one. University is considered a job slot.
And it's not really rejecting specialists that make them leave but more prioritizing specialists in other domes. It's the conjunction of both which make it work really well and instantaneously. They go in priority where you prioritize them.
It's also why you don't have to prioritize non specialists in any dome cause if you prioritize them in your educationnal dome, they'll constantly come from your other domes to be formed at the university.

Hi @All,
I am coming back to this old topic because I have just started playing SuMa. Did I understand all your postings right, when I sum up it like dont build the university to early. you will only need it when there are only martian born people and if there are more people then jobs. Right?

I had the same problem the thread starter had. I build an university in my second dome because I thought education as early as possible has to be good. then all my unspecialized and employed people switched into the university and nobody wanted to serve meals and sell electronics or art. And yeah, I allready read that nobody really needs art and electronic stores. will take that in mind in my next try :)

You have gotten the wrong impression. The advice is, don't build your university in a dome with productive pops. Give it its own dome. Build it when you are confident in your ability to support a dome that is pure utility. This can be well before you are at the only martianborn stage.

Ok, got it. It has to have its own dome. But in my last game I built a new dome for the university and connected it to the 2nd dome, which is productiv. And all my non specialists from the kitchen and the shop walked over into the other dome and started studying. Does the university dome not have a direct pipe connection to any other dome?

It would eventually even out but connecting to a hard production dome isn't ideal. A strategy I use is to create a dome that exists primarily to provide services and connect productive domes to it. For instance my initial dome is always next to rare metals and ideally normal metals as well. It generally doesn't have enough room for many services. Especially once I optimize it. So what I usually end up doing is making a medium dome that doesn't get much if any production buildings but is heavy on services. Then I connect domes of various purposes to it. Like this I usually end up supporting a children's dome, 2 productive domes and a university dome.

Also your initial university is going to take people away from productive jobs. You need to make sure you are in a position that you can leave those jobs open for a while. Its important to remember that a single university can keep many more people educated than its slots because a person lives far longer than it takes to educate them. If you need to you can shut down slots on a university so it takes fewer people but its best to just leave all 3 shifts fully open and get everybody educated. Skilled workers produce far more than unskilled.

Well, thx for these tips! I will take them into account on my next session!
