After some experimentation, I notice I'm able to fully deplete dark black spaces over the course of weeks, not years. It was so fast I could watch it in real time. So yes, it seems like a major overhaul is in order... I just don't think "unlimited" is realistic or desirable. I still think 5 game years is a reasonable timeframe - your city shouldn't be Oil Town for dozens of generations but at the same time real oil extraction isn't instantaneous like it appears to be in game.

Yes, the rate they get sucked up is beyond ridiculous. And when it is dry, all the buildings swap over to import mode and cause a massive amount of cargo to swarm into the city.

I don't think the mechanic is realistic nor fun.

You do not need to delete them. They will import the resources and continue production. You just get a bit less taxes that way. But more than if you imported the finished goods.

Actually if you always let the oil industries remain after the underlying resource has been depleted,
you will likely soon have a huge oil industry district with lots of traffic problems because all of those industries will need to import oil in order to function

You just get a bit less taxes that way.

How do you know?
I can't find any information on any taxes from natural resources
I can't find any income from the sale of any natural resources

IMHO SC2013 did a much better job in this area. In SimCity2013 I knew how much was in the ground. How much it cost to extract it. How much I could sell it for etc. (Yeah I know; when it worked, fudged numbers, etc. etc. etc.)
But here it just seems like there was a week or two before the game was to be released and in the 'launch' meeting someone said "Hey what about natural resources? Has anyone worked on that yet?" The answer was obviously "NO" and then the boss threw a couple of team members on it last minute "Just to get something out before launch"

Just my opinion :)
Just seems to me that in CS this aspect of the game was kinda thrown together without much thought or real world practice/knowledge etc.

Should imo at least be a mod/option. It's not like the balance of the game right now is so perfect nobody would ever think of screwing with it... ;)
There is a mod that stops them running out.

I would like to see them last much longer, but still run out. They said they would last "a very long time" before release, if this is considered "a very long time" then I'd hate to imagine how fast they'd run out if they'd said "fairly quickly".

I -think- the idea is that if you produce the oil, refine the oil and then sell the oil, you tax every single stage of that so you get more tax (and also I think the devs mentioned that the heavily polluting specs brought in more money too). if you import it then you only tax the refining and selling, or even just the selling.

This I understand but where in any of the tabs can I see this? I can't find the information anywhere in game. Sure the devs say this and that but where oh where is the proof? Where is this information within my budget?
This is one of the areas of the game that is so very incomplete.

So basically your oil and ore districts last only a few weeks and then you delete them and never use them again. What's the point?

12 minutes
Just 12 minutes of game play on the highest speed and the map ran out of resources

Too bad the developers spent only 12 minutes on this aspect of the game

Isn't this just a symptom of another problem?

An oil well may last a few years of decades if drilled carefully and slowly. In this game time goes so quickly that some of mine have lasted 10 -20 years when I've just put one derrick in. Days whiz by in seconds, so weeks and months in minutes and years in just a short sitting in the game. by then at the lowest speed you're off doing other things and then come back and you're having to demolish your oil derricks.

Yes, I'd love to have this information much more apparent than it is. It's doing a disservice to the simulation by not making this more apparent, because in the eyes of the player, it's simply "place yellow, get yellow monies."
