Honestly guys, playable non merchant Republics are something I've been dying to have in Crusader Kings II for a long time. While I'm unoriginal, and can't really think of any mechanics to make them work and be unique, I've seen some great suggestions on reddit that I'll link below.

Now resources seem like something that won't be added, but CK2+ has already extended Silk Road mechanics to the whole map, so I imagine something like that could take the place of the suggested resources. Just please, while you're all suggesting adding East Asia and theocracies, don't forget about the inland Republics.
