I'm not really the type of player that looks for historical realism to the degree that all my divisions have historical names. So, I was really happy when Paradox decided we could also turn off the historical names for divisions. However, it seems that the system for name-giving has been completely reworked, much to the disadvantage of the type of player I consider myself to be.

Take for example the paratrooper division template. For some immersion, I refuse to lead paratrooper battalions into battle as Germany with the "Paratrooper Division" name. So, I always change the name of the division template to "Luftwaffe-Regiment". This worked fine on the previous versions of the game, as I would roll out the 1. Luftwaffe-Regiment, then the 2. Luftwaffe-Regiment and so on. However, this changed with the recent patch. Now, when I rename the template, it doesn't change anything anymore. When I start training my "Luftwaffe-Regiment" templates, they are automatically assigned the generic "1. Airborne Division" name. And that's not even half as bad as it gets. They are also all awarded the same number. So when I try to train my "Motorisierte Infanterie-Division", they are all listed as 2. Motorised Division, and that for every single one of them. The previous system wasn't good, no, but this is just a big let down for a player who really doesn't want to be bothered by the historical division names, simply because the Germans didn't change their names in a logical order back in the days.

Perhaps this is food for thought, no?

It looks like it's a bug or just badly documented. I tried with Manchukuo and the "none" namelist works by using the template name, while for Germany it uses "n. Infanterie-Division", but there is no special "none" namelist for GER in the namelist file.

I just wish the "none" option could use the template name and that there was a syntax of sorts #%dot or nd/rd and similar options before or after the name.

Sure I can do my own name lists outside of the game and load as a mod but that's not really intuitive for the regular player.
Same with ships and air squadrons.

It works like that for most nations. The problem is that "none" will first try to fallback to pre-Cornflakes names (which were implemented for major powers). I would argue that it is a bug now.

That's a new one to me. Think this thread may deserve to be moved into the bug-report section as well. Let me pass it on!

Seems there are a couple of issue already of this bug:
https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/hoi-4-rename-divisions-after-reboot.1102077/

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/hoi-4-division-names.1097684/

As an additional info, I noticed that strangely this bug popped up for me after some time. I clearly remember having a game where “None” naming template worked as intended, while now it switch back randomly or assign “infantry-division” or “artillery-division” etc. depending on the unit composition.
Obviously all of the above tests were done with the same game version (latest).

Isn't it dependent on the country? Like I said above the old system had specialized names only for some countries. The whole thing had already been described in detail by one of the devs (TomaszKowalczyk?) but I can't find the thread using search (or in my own post history).

It is dependent on the country, but unless I’m terribly wrong you should get the template name with a progressive number in front of it.
Well... I’m not so sure tbh you made me reflect about it... I’ll delve deeper!
Thanks!

It would be great to see this fixed! By selecting "None" I would expect the default behavior to be "#. <TemplateName>", so a template named "Custom Division" would be serialized as "1. Custom Division", "2. Custom Division", etc.
