So how do you simulate the rare EU era colonizing powers like Brandenburg-Prussia? Maybe an event granting some states a colonist permanently? It would have to be a quite rare event, though.

Its very simple. If you are playing them, pick one of the colonist granting IGs. If you aren't its not worth caring about. Fact of the matter is from 1444 to whenever, a fair number of nations are at risk of being dead or in cicumstances not conducive to owning small Caribbean islands, which is a more relevant factor (along with it being likely to be of little or no benefit to the country, ironicly close to real life here).

Granting a nation a colonist isn't going to simulate a minor coloniser, because they are going to be able to make new colonies continually. You 'could' just give them a new colony (random province) directly.

Hmm, a rare random event granting you a colony does seem like a better alternative to simulate minor colonizers. I wonder if it's even doable for modding if PI doesn't implement it eventually. :O

Colonists are added via a global modifier, so modders should have no problem making it happen if they wanted to.

This should be the case for all the NIs I think. Rather than having AI taking NIs from pre determined, always the same list, it should select them via some kind of algorithm when needed. I wonder how CK2 exported games would look like, if there's no such tags as ENG, POR, or CAS/SPA. Would there be no AI discoveries/colonisation?

Would be cool if devs could change this in the future.

I think it is rather complicated, but I also think that it would be worth the work for the NIs involving colonists.

I wish Japan that gets a colonist would at least colonize Hokkaido. Also would like to see Brunei or Majahapat colonize Indonesia. Seeing Portugal and Spain there EVERY game is making my eyes bleed.

EU3 became fun when the AI Papal States started colonizing........

Asian colonizing will have to wait for DLC.......

CK2 conversions were recently updated so that all english culture nations get ENG ideas, all Portugese culture nations get POR ideas, and all Castillian culture nations get SPA ideas, and norse culture nations get NOR ideas.

Morocco could use a colonist, they do colonize Africa historically and had aspirations for colonizing the New World, I believe. forget the leader that wanted to do that. Don't know if they should take an applicable idea tree or get a colonist from Moroccan ideas, instead of the Berber ideas they have now.

a colonist late in the tree would let it prehaps colonize down to songhai like it did in reality. japan and malayan states never use their colonist, so I doubt it would change the world...

Really they should try and make it so that AI ideas arent scripted but are more random, or shall I say picked by the AI based on the situation not only international but also internally in what they can afford to put points into.

While the Mamluks shouldn't get Exploration normally, if they are defeating the Ottomans maybe they would want to get Expansion ideas and colonize those bits of Eastern Africa that are almost never touched and get a free CB to push into India.

I find this also to be a problem with converting a game from CK2 as often many of the counties aren't the marked out countries to get Expansion or Exploration so they don't colonize or they don't til very late game. There is also the fact that if anyone other than Muscovy wins in the Russia than no one will colonize Siberia until freaking Spain or someone gets the whole way around

Maybe the strategic part of the AI could do a check if there is a good opportunity for colonizing when selecting a new idea group. Like number of reachable unclaimed provinces, how many other countries have colonizing ideas, etc. Having AI:s adapting strategy to game state changes is always nice.
