The succession system for most non-christian monarchies is kind of inappropriate. It doesn't make much historical sense for them to ever run out of heirs as they typically practiced polygamy, which produced a plentiful supply of heirs. As far as I know, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhist and the Chinese all allowed their monarchs to make as many heirs as he wished, so this isn't a unique issue to any specific religion or culture. For the vast majority of the world outside of Europe, the current heir system doesn't make much sense.
I think, instead there should be a new succession systems for the non-Christians. The norm for non-christians would be to have several heirs, and succession would be problematic in another way. The number of your heirs would be the problem.
Heirs would be divided according to the strength of their claim, from strong, medium to weak. Generally, the number of strong claimants would be the problem. So when the king dies, and he leaves behind five strong claimants, it would deeply destabilize the realm and provoke several pretender rebel uprisings, fighting in the name of the other heirs.
To manage successions, the player would be able to spend legitimacy, gold, prestige, autonomy and other such resources to strengthen the claim of an heir and undermine the claims of heirs he doesn't want to succeed to the throne. Various events would also either weaken or improve the claims of your heirs: e.g. "Abdul has been found courting a milk maid, the court is shocked. - 10 % claim for Abdul" or "Abdul crushed the infidels in a decisive battle! +10 % claim for Abdul".
Making your desired heir a military commander would improve his claim, but that would obviously put his life in danger as well.
Ideally, you should have only 1 heir with a strong claim, while reducing the others to a weak claim, but you would have to spend money, legitimacy and prestige to that end. Assassinations of heirs should also be possible, but it would involve severe stability penalties if you are exposed.
