Obviously much is still unknown about the religion and coronation systems. One shortcoming of the CK2 coronation system is that it did not acknowledge the Pope's attempts to extend Roman authority through coronation of pagan and non Catholic rulers. A great example is Daniel of Galicia who was crowned by a delegation from Pope Innocent IV as part of a transactional deal that also involved expectations of subordination of his territories to Rome on his part and the pope calling for a crusade against the Mongols on the part of the pope (neither of these latter two conditions were actually realized though). I believe that some kings of Serbia were possibly also crowned by the Pope despite not follwoing Catholic rite or acknowledging papal supremacy. I believe some late antiquity coronations of tribal rulers were concurrent with or followed shortly after conversion.

Tl;dr If Catholic moral authority or its equivalent is high and the pope (or other pope tier religious figure?) is nearby, I think it would be cool if this kind of interaction might be possible in CK3. Maybe you get a favor-equivalent from the pope but antagonize clergy / zealous of your religion.

CK2 lacked coronations for so long it'd be lame to not get them in CK3.

I'd like to see this: an event, popping up some weeks after a pagan king inherits a kingdom or is installed as its ruler. The event has 2 fellas - papal legates - offering the new ruler a crown and the blessing of the Holy Church if he/she converts to Catholicism and aid Rome on temporal matters.

It would play into a (hopefully) larger political system. For the Pope too engaged widely in politics - the whole investiture controversy which began in 1076 is a product of these politics. So are the crusades and a lot of other things which strengthened Papal authority. But the pope too was susceptible to local power struggles which often made him vulnerable. Generally I'd like to politics to exist in CK3 for they didn't exist in CK2.

CK2 lacked coronations for so long it'd be lame to not get them in CK3.
The problem here is that they started work on CK III well before the last few DLC for CK II, and so I think we're going to end up with a game that contains more than CK II did at launch but far less than it had by the end. I don't think we're going to get a lot of the Holy Fury and Jade Dragon mechanics or the 936 scenario.

And we know we're not getting papal investiture because that was confirmed a while ago.

We also know that pretty much all events are generic; i.e. they can fire for anyone because they're Lifestyle-based rather than religion or culture-based. This was confirmed in the FAQ.

Even if the release version is very fun and very stable (fingers crossed), it may end up feeling bland after a few playthroughs, because it sounds like you're likely to see the same events and mechanics no matter who you play as.
