If the space bar is pause, they're wont be a button for this, put there is a button specificially labbelled 'Pause/break' ... Whats everyones issue with it?
Foolish comments. If we say we don't like the pause/break key, we don't like the pause/break key. Why would we lie or deceive ourselves about this?

I use the mouse with my right hand; to use the pause/break key, I have to have my left hand, reaching over to the upper-right part of the keyboard. And, given my seating arrangement, this feels uncomfortable. Space bar is much more natural (if space bar feels uncomfortable to use, you shouldn't be using the computer). Even better would be giving us an option.

Woh  I was only asking whats peoples difficulties with using the Puse button ... Yeesh. Alternativly, you could move your right hand, if you can't do that, maybe you shouldnt be using a computer.

An options is the best result, meaning we all win, even those of us who 'shouldn't be using computers' with our ability to move our right hands.

In a general fashion, I simply want way more shortcuts. I've always felt PI games have way too little shortcuts. Ideally I think it should be possible to play without any mouse at all.

I support this request.
Could be my words.

The Pause/Break key is hard to get to. Particularly when something important happens and I need to pause now and the few game hours that tick by while I reach for my pause key could be quite problematic.

For me, i always found the pause button to be in the perfect position.
You have the left hand index finger for zoom/speed, the thumb for supressing messages, and the pinky/ring finger for pausing/unpausing.

Well, if we agree that we all (or vast majority) can both move our right hands to press pause/break and press space bar, then we can discuss which is better. I think space is better because you can't miss it. Even if your hand is somewhere else, you'll practically naturally move it there, without looking, because you're using space much more often than pause/break. I usually have to look to find pause/break and I can lose some precious time that way. Mostly it's nothing but sometimes it can hurt a lot.

Of course, the option to assign pause to a key is a win-win situation.

Another minus for the use of the pause key is that on some (and I think an increasing number) laptops, to hit "pause" also requires using the fn (function) key. 2 buttons=bad pausing schema:p

Please, think of those who take HoI with them wherever they go :D

My brand new laptop has no pause compatible button on it. So i havent been able to pause any game i've started using buttons. I always have to reach at it with the mouse.

There should definitely be a way to config the keys so we can assign them ourselves.

The reason I don't want to use the space bar is not becuase its easier to hit the pause button, but rather, its alot easier to use it for its current use. There is no alternative for it, my hands rest on the keyboard, so If i want to click 'go to' itwould reguire a movement that is greater then that of moving my right hand to the puase key ...

But its each to their own I guess, I've just always wondered as to why so many people want a space bar pause key, when a button designed specifically for it exists.

I agree. I haven't used a desktop for personal use since college. Eventually a settle down and get one, but for now, the pause button requires the function key. It'd be nice if it was something else.

But its each to their own I guess, I've just always wondered as to why so many people want a space bar pause key, when a button designed specifically for it exists.

Well, in reality no keyboard button was designed for any task except to send (effectively) the numbers 0-127 to a computer for further interpretation. (Now it goes higher, but thats besides the point). It was just commonly accepted (and designed from that) that the numbers should be interpreted consistantly (the concept behind ASCII) , so that when you hit the 'a' key on a keyboard, the number '97' is sent to the computer which then goes "you just hit 'a' "

So thats why people want the option of assigning there own pause key, a button designed specifically for it DOESN'T exist :)

PS. Wikipedia has a pretty good summary of it
Wikipedia said:
The Break key/Pause key no longer has a well-defined purpose. Its origins go back to teletype users, who wanted a key that would temporarily interrupt the communications line. The Break key can be used by software in several different ways, such as to switch between multiple login sessions, to terminate a program, or to interrupt a modem connection. In programming, especially old DOS-style BASIC, Pascal and C, Break is used (in conjunction with Ctrl) to stop program execution. In addition to this, Linux and variants, as well as many DOS programs, treat this combination the same as Ctrl+C. On modern keyboards, the break key is usually labeled Pause/Break. In most Windows environments, the key combination Windows key+Pause brings up the system properties.

If using the mouse, how hard is it to click on the date? Is it for trying to play hands free?

If you're playing on reasonably fast time settings, which I tend to do in peacetime, there's far shorter latency to stab the Pause key my finger is already hovering on when something happens than there is to move my mouse precisely to the (rather small) clock and click it. I don't want to lose half a day(HoI)/month(EU) of combat response time because I misclicked.

If you are playing that fast set teh messages to pause on combat, or whatever else you are doing.

Crazy people without programmable mice. The same button I use for Back in a browser is Pause in all my Paradox games.

But yeah, a more customizable UI would generally be a good thing.

You will find that comes to a grinding halt after you upgrade to Vista. And thats not a Vista problem, its just that the software to run specialty mouse is really buggy with all PI games.

And the solution I've been given is that there is no solution.

I have the MS Comfort Optical Mouse 3000, and it will only run PI games if I have the generic mouse software, not the software that came with the mouse, which means no programing buttons. It works fine with other programs, but not with PI games.

It worked when I had Win XP, but it was quirky. With Vista, the zoom doesn't work, the motion is jerky, ... (there were other problems, but I can't remember them now).

PI isn't the only company that can't handle Vista 64 (Relic Warhammer series is having a hell of a time). I suspect its MS's ideology that everyone should pay through the nose to be compatible with thier products.

The spacebar is the biggest key on the keyboard, and I find it so much easier to play with the mouse in my right hand with one finger draped lazily over the spacebar, ready to pause at a moment's notice. Can't do that with pause/break, because then I have to awkwardly hover my arm across the length of the keyboard the entire time.
