Alright so, I need this question answered as it just ruined my game as China.

So, playing China on non-historical focuses. Japan went non-aligned which is what I wanted as they don't get marco polo incident, so I -shouldn't- go to war with them until I want to. So I'm eating up the warlords now and out of nowhere, no warning whatsoever, no warning that I had a wargoal on me or -ANYTHING-, Japan declares war on me when im knee-deep in the clique so I died right there and then, which ruined my achievment run.

So my question is.... How does Japan get a war goal on me when they are non-aligned when their focuses has NOTHING on me?

Not sure about Japan attacking China when it goes non-aligned, but another pitfall of the non-aligned Japan path is that Manchukuo can break away and join the Axis.

This was a much bigger deal on the MTG patch, when Germany always defeated the USSR, giving you a huge border with a hostile major.

Well, I just looked it up. It's not been said by the devs, but its because Communist China provokes Japan and Japan then gets a free wargoal on both Nat and Communist China, without -ANY- warning what so ever.

So... something that should be fixed. I don't mind the wargoal that Japan gets thanks to Communist China, but some warning that it's happening soon would be swell.

It's pretty good strategy as China to take out Communist China first to prevent things like this.

Yea, I now will be doing this from now on, though I consistently am having to restart my games as China. Lol. Trying to get the right set of circumstances to go is a pain. 1st, Japan has to go non aligned and 2nd, MOST of the warlords have to deny me since having them all as puppets is not good for me with the army reform.

Are you trying to do achievements? Sounds like you are, otherwise you can at least set game rules for non-aligned Japan.

If so, playing on historical is 100% more worthwhile then relying on RNG. You just need to form a consistent plan that will work >95% of time (some RNG are unavoidable like austira-hungary). Wasting time to refine a sure-fire strategy is at least more fun than wasting time to restart the game, build up etc...

Source: Trust me (lol), all my 112 achievements are on historical and I wouldnt want one to do one on ahist (though looks like we need to for the latest ones...)

I guess i just don't care enough to try and restart to find a stratrgy that defeats Japan. I rather build up to do it then losing all my guns and supplies dying to the banzai.

Plus i wanna take the warlords first instead of just having them in a faction.

When playing as ROC with a non-aligned Japan, always take Communist China out first.

Actually, when playing ROC period, always take out Communist China first.

This is due to Communist China having a National Focus that lets it provoke war with Japan, regardless of any non-aggression pacts ROC may have with Japan. Comm China can ruin your plans in the worst way with this, so Chairman Mao has to go. Also, Sinkiang has the ability to annex Communist China if left alone long enough. This puts all the VPs to capitulate the "new" Communist China in Sinkiang, meaning you've got to go through Ma Bufang's 1-infrastucture country to get to him (yay attrition and low supply penalties!). Plus Sheng Shicai loves joining the Comintern, which needlessly complicates any attempt to unify China.

Eat Communist China and eat it first.

Also, when grinding xp to buy down your army penalties, remember that you don't have to win a war quickly. Your manpower reserves are as close to limitless as any country in this game. It may be callous, but endlessly throwing bodies against a wall in Shanxi can get you the xp you need, whereas actually defeating your opponents quickly makes it hard to pay off those army maluses.

But always burn Communist China as fast as possible.
