(Apart from her navy) England was very definitely a third rate European power in those times and Elizabeth needed to continually play off France/Scotland and Spain against each other.

Surely 2nd rate, at least. ;)

If the Spanish Armada had landed their troops in southwest England instead of sailing eastwards to rendevous with the additional troops then England would have been conquered and the Church of England possibly dissolved.

Conclusion: none really... I just wanted to waffle :)

However, the Armada itself carried only about 18,000 soldiers, so I rather doubt that it could have conquered England. Hence the plan for it to rendezvous with troops in the Netherlands and allow them to cross the Channel.

More French what if :

As Raphael and Martin Cullell-Young indicate there are a certain number of variants historically possible for France in 1492.

[Some] provinces were not french in 1492 as his son choose to marry the heir of Britanny Anne later in order integrate Britanny in the realm. The marriage with little marguerite was canceled and these provinces came back to the Empire (HRE).

So the variants can be
1)France trade Britanny to easter and northern provinces
2)A Weaker Royal power
Burgundy, Britanny and 'Provence' are minors states. Burgundy has close relations with England and the Empire (HRE).
3)France protector of Italian renaissance

Actually this should be a really good basis for scenarii as some French provinces were really not French (I'm from Britanny, so I know a bit about how narrowly French took over control on this rich land at the time. As said François I : 'Britanny is our Peru'...).
French is united as a country only since Louis XIV (the crushing of local parliament) and the French Revolution. A scenario based on weak power and struggle between the crown and duchys can be interresting.
It might a bit too french centred, but as french are self-centred, not surprising
:)

Dear all (but especially the beta testers, as they have a better command of the CG and of the map).

I have just read ('The Art of War in the Sixteenth Century', by Sir Charles Oman) that in 1569 Turkey sent an expedition to Astrakhan that failed miserably and was annihilated. Some sources have stated that its purpose was to dig a canal between the rivers Don and Volga (I suppose at the Don bend, near present-day Volgograd). But what if it had not failed? What would have been the consequences of Turkish domination reaching the Don/Volga area?

Also, what do you think would have happened if the Turks had occupied Vienna in 1529? Anyone wishing to speculate and/or create what-if scenarios? Alas, if I had been a beta tester... (sigh)!

Best regards, as always.

Martin
