Just for fun I wanted to see how to do this acheivement. Didn't look too hard. I mean the Timbuktu is right there, right?
Yea well, they have 4 troops and a negative 3 income at the start. Hmm. Anyone tried this? What did you do?

I almost won the first war against Mali by attacking my eastern neighbor first and annexing as much as possible, then making Mali carpet siege me and baiting them in to terrain battles.

However they then came back at me. I should have peaced out earlier.

The problem is that once you start losing the war, you're screwed. Mali wants to annex you. They will not accept any peace offer.

The good part is that you then go in to spectator mode and can play whomever you please, or wait for Songhai to re-emerge via rebels.

for me, extremely easy. ate all of west africa except for Mali. Then turned maintenance all the way down, went like 30 over force limit, and the war was easy. took like 3 wars to take all of mali. then portugal showed up, I westernized, and they killed me anyway.


basically, go way over your force limit by turning maintenance down. build up your tax base by taking all the weaker states. only turn maintenance up for war, save up enough money before hand so that you can last the duration of the war without taking too many loans.

This might be cheating but there's a mod that gives Songhai and only Songhai Muslim tech, so you can squish Mali and Karem easily.

The easiest way to do this is to vassalize all the states around you. This will give you a force larger than Mali. Depending on when they attack you first, you may have to give them a province to allow you to build up your forces. You should be able to win the second war against them, and all you need to ask for is Timbuktu.

I was able to get a PU with Mali, so it was almost "instat win" for me... all I had to do was wait 50 years... Then I played a normal game and now it looks like this:

probably vassalized hausa with war and then after annexing he can fabricate claims on them

If you position your troops in Timbuktu mali will send its forces in the native lands and will be entering your territory weakened pick them up and destroy them repeat this until you got all there troops destroyed .

I wish I saved my SS before I reinstalled EU4, but I had a rare opportunity where Jolof rebels were kicking Mali's ass for years. I just swooped in and got the achievement in less than an hour. Mali later came back with the eastern neighbors as allies and kicked my butt however.

Go east as Songhai ... after RM-ing and getting an Alliance with Mali.

After you vassalize Hausa & Karem (Hausa will take 2 wars), and diplo-annex, go after Mali.

It will take 2 wars (make sure you take the gold provinces & the province just to the west of Timbuktu to isolate it).

As mentioned, just go way over force-limits for both wars against Mali.

As I just wanted to get the achievement done, I just did a bunch of loans for 1st war and broke the truce near immediately to take the isolated Timbuktu province.

Well i did my first attempt. I thought I was doing great. Annexed H and vassalized K, got the other 2 nations on the coast annexed, then declared on Mali when K was annexed, with 24 troops to their 22, my king as general at 3,4,3,0 pips to thier 2,0,2 pip general. Wouldn't you know it, the game decided to off my king 2 days before the first engagement was clashing. Wiped my army and the manpower is laughable, so no coming back. Game over.

You probably would had been fine with 30+ troops (loans to finance, assuming effort is just for the Achievement)

yeah as someone said, Hausa has provinces both bordering songhai and on the coast. annexing them gives you claim possibilities.
