Hi guys, very confused. My race is xenophobe / egalitarian / materialist. My idea is basically greedy capitalist space slugs who use the megacorporation government type, but which enslave other races, viewing them as inferior.

However, now that I've conquered my first race, I can't seem to enable slavery due to being egalitarian. Not only that, they're trying to emigrate and I can't seem to stop them -- again, due to being "egalitarian." There used to be a special "xeno slavery" option that popped up once you had another race in your empire, but I can't find it now.

What's going on? Isn't the point of xenophobe that you can enslave other races?

This is about the 3rd or 4th time since Stellaris's release that I've tried to make this race idea work, and I'm pretty sure it's supposed to now.

***

Apr. 12, 2017 update after the release of 1.5.1:

PSA: Do NOT allow the game to update to 1.5.1 if you used the fix kindly provided by @GAGA Extrem. If your race uses his fixed policies file to enable slavery, loading your savegames will actually force change your policies and free your slaves.

Because I was playing iron man and they fixed the autosave bug, that means it also saved over my game file. All my slaves have been freed and they immediately founded an angry faction. Using the policies file in this thread in 1.5.1 does not fix the problem. Returning to 1.5.0 also, somehow, does not fix the problem.

Beware the always-awful Paradox Patch Day!

Select a pope of the xenos, then go for species rights.

However, I haven't played Egalitarian since 1.5, so it might indeed be that being any form Egalitarian prevents slavery entirely.
(Which I would personally consider stupid, but eh.)

Xeno specifically says I can enslave aliens. Egalitarian does not say that all slavery of any kind is forbidden. Indeed, that would be a step backward in complexity from the old patch, which allowed individualist/xenophobe to enslave xenos.

If even after spending upwards of $100 on this game, I still can't make a corporation that enslaves xenos -- which was my very first race idea and which I've tried to make in every single patch -- I am gonna pop a vein.

So I can't restrict their migration (due to the egalitarian ethic), and they're all emigrating out.

But I can purge them.

What?

I swear to God, this better be a bug...

But I can purge them.

That actually makes it somewhat reasonable.
It means that Egalitarian are fanatically against all forms of slavery, even against hated xenos, which reduces their options to purging or displacing the aliens instead of enslaving them. Kinda, you WANT them to leave/migrate out of your empire.

Arguably, that's a hilarious hypocrite culture, but then again Egalitarian+Xenophobe effectively means 'Equal rights for everyone! No rights for others!' so...

I suppose I can understand Paradox' decisionmaking there, but I would think that maybe Non-Fanatic Egalitarian should be allowed to have Xeno slaved regardless. Might want to make that a Suggestion.

edit: Seems it's just a case of OP not knowing how to actually handle species rights then.
Seems like Paradox QA doesn't know to make sure they are actually using the correct version before lecturing users :p

Egalitarian Xenophobes can enslave other species just fine.

Just remember that this is done on species level now, so you have to go to the species tab, select the target species and then open the SET RIGHTS subtab.
This is also the place where you can enable migration controls.

I really want you to be right, but in my game right now, you're not. Slavery in greyed out because "X Has policy Slavery Allowed," and I can't turn slavery on in Policies and Edicts because "X Does NOT have Egalitarian ethic."

I'll take some screenshots.

Did you manually switch to No-Slavery earlier?
Did any of you two start with the Syncretic Evolution, which may or may not alter at which Slavery setting your empire starts?
I feel like the Xeno Slaves Only policy setting shouldn't have been removed per default.

No, I never touched the slavery policies. I also didn't start with Syncretic Evolution. I seem to remember in my old games when I tried to make this or a similar race, Xeno Slavery Allowed didn't show up as an option until I had conquered another race, so I thought that would happen here too.

Right, it looks like the recent change for this didn't make it into release.

I'll add a quick fix for you until it's officially patched (works fine on my beta build).
Copy the attached file to your Stellaris\common\policies folder and overwrite the existing one.

I'd noticed this problem too - my xenophobic egalitarians couldn't enslave their syncretic evolution species (which was pretty bad given I had the decadent trait...) - so I'm glad to see it's a bug that PDox have fixed. I've started another game since, so I'll probably just wait for the patch before trying this empire again rather that trying the fix, but thanks for putting it up anyway GAGA Extrem.

To be fair, if you play with manually modified files, and there's a patch, you should be aware that the patch very likely overrode your changes and can lead to (un)predictable results unless you reapply the patch.
Loading an irreversible save game (aka ironman) without checking what the changes caused by the patch would do, cannot exactly blamed upon anyone but yourself.

Albeit the chain of events you described in the 1.5.1 discussion were hilarious to listen to. :3

That's why it's a PSA, buddy. There was absolutely no way to know what would happen unless I tried it. I'm not saying Paradox should issue their resignations, so you can take your helpful advice to another thread where I'm sure someone is dying to hear it.

Apologies if I came across as annoying, hostile, insultive or dismissive, not my intention.
