As both Lancaster and York are possible revolt states, I planned to celebrate Valentines Day by playing as either during the War of the Roses. But when I set 1a55 as starting date, there was only a single England. Might be that there were Yorkian rebels running around, I didn't check, because I really expected to see a divided England at some point between 1455 and 1485.

Just a little surprised why those two nations are in the game, and not playable during that period. I just can't see what other purpose they would serve.

I think the game needs a new civil war mechanic, not a rebel mechanic but a separate entity. I am not sure how it would be implemented, but the current system doesn't let rebellions recruit new men, nor does it let the rebel armies to replenish fast. So if there is only one revolt(wanting their own king on the throne, in game it translates as pretenders) in a big country, by that I mean only one stack of rebels, it is not hard to defeat them. It gets annoying when the rebels pop up everywhere, but the thing about them is that they are separate rebels. Like peasants, nationalists, patriots, zealots and etc. So they are not united and they are enemies of eachother. But what separates civil wars from rebellions is that the opposing sides have similar might, so no one gets the upper hand so easily.

I think it being called a 'war' is a bit of an overstatement, it was a very limited conflict between two families. Most of the peasants only noticed a slight rise in food prices if anything. And you cant really expect paradox to have history files for every minor conflict that ever happened.

From what I've gathered through history file diving due to massive boredom, I believe that at some date, the War of the Roses was represented by giving a bunch of provinces in England a slightly higher revolt risk. What I can't recall is whether that was vanilla or added by a mod.

I agree, a civil war system would be very fun. Perhaps EU4 should consider a new system. It should incorporate stability, cores, etc.

1450.1.1  = { citysize = 3000 }
1453.1.1  = { revolt_risk = 5 } # Start of the War of the Roses
1461.6.1  = { revolt_risk = 2 } # Coronation of Edward IV

Well they have the event in the history files, but it's just considered a revolt, not a war between two countries. I wonder if they'll ever be able to script civil wars that don't have to be hard-coded like the American Civil War in Victoria II.

One possibility is if one culture group or one nationality is under a constant revolt risk for long enough, then they could break free as one nation. Similar with nationalist rebels only more instantaneous.

It was politically significant as it led to the transition from Plantagenet to Tudor England. As for expecting Paradox to have history files for it, they already do, rendering that argument moot. York and Lancaster are country tags and there is an English unification decision to conclude it. The problem is that they don't really seem to work, and at this point it's likely to never be fixed. We know Paradox is including a Wars of the Roses chain for EUIV, so hopefully that'll be functional.

We know there is a detailed War of the Roses DHE for EU4, although that is a detailed event, not as it appears a civil war mechanic.

As tuareg109 pointed out, Lex Talionis is partly built around civil wars, which you can read about in the thread :) .

Well, you could agrue that the large amount of nobles dying exacerbated the effects on the black death in the weakening of federalism but apart from that the war changed almost nothing. Also see here a small list of revolts in a small section of the games history and explain how you want someone to accurately represent them all?
