To be clear, the North wasn't racing to abolish slavery in 1860. The North was merely racing to limit its expansion.
But I concur: South Carolina was coordinating its secession efforts with other states. I doubt all of them would have left, but even if Lincoln had said, "hey, let's cut a deal," it was certain that several intended to secede regardless before he'd even be in office and in a position to act on such commitments.
