Idea how tech espionage could work in stellaris:

1. You send your spies to get the tech from the XY empire
2. You steal papers on said tech, or maybe a random tech you don't have
everything went well or enemy empire knows you stole it and is angry and wars you
3. To understand the tech, you would have to research it, but since you stole it, you get the card
4. Various outcomes are possible: You learn the tech and can use it
You still don't understand it, but can try again after you researched similar lesser techs
Prototype malfunctions and pops on that planet are unhappy
Planet explodes
Sun explodes
A tear in reality opens and the unbidden eat you

Something like that.
Just to ensure you only steal techs you really really want and must have.

So, there will be no tech trade (one of the devs said so in a video, look it up in the sticky video thread) b/c he does not like it b/c this way all factions may get all techs.

I respectfully disagree, ie I am FOR tech trade in all its forms:
- simple exchange / donations (between ferderation/alliance partners)
- espionage / theft
- real trade
- plundering/war gains (the winner of a war)


SO, can/could it be modded in?
Tech exchange from federations is sort of in with the federation fleet.

You can also plunder tech from wrecks so after a war you can backwards engineer enemy tech.

From the header I thought, "oh god no, there is tech trading in this game!(?). I can't recall seeing that". I was greatly relived to find it was someone asking for it, not someone protesting that it was in.

Like many here, I don't like Tech Trades. Very gamey and totally unnecessary, and so 1990's. In any game that I have played (eg: Civ) I have turned it off. Back engineering is a solid and simple replacment. If we had tech trades in this game it would just throw a huge spanner in the works of the current and inspiring three card option tech tree.

I like research agreements, where two empires can sign an agreement which gives a small bonus to research. Straight up tech trades are bad simply because they are very easy to abuse. Imagine in MP where you and two allied players all agree to research separate things then keep trading them to each other the second they are finished. Compare that to a player who is allied to an a.i or no one... Not a good thing in my opinion.

Instead of tech trading, I suggest ability to order ships from other empires. Much more in keeping with the theme of "Victoria in Space."

I'd really like to see ship trading/gifting an option. For example, in that stream when that other empire was being attacked by the Blorg's neighbors and they didn't want to get directly involved, I would have liked them to be able to donate ships to their cause.

Outright gifting of ships could get in the way of more advanced diplomatic/peace options later on, such as fleet size restrictions. In MP, you could well "gift" your ships to an ally not covered by the treaty to avoid it, and then get them back during a war.

The majority of those who post here seem to be anti-options that you can turn off/on. I don't understand their antipathy towards it... but they are a vocal majority it would seem.

My main argument for it is that the AI should play differently if it is allowed to tech trade than if it is not allowed and similarly for any other optional rules and this makes it difficult to make the AI competent... Not that I'm a AI programmer but this seems reasonable to me.

A good argument, but I can still see things - not every single thing asked for, but a couple that are good ideas that some would enjoy and others would not. An option for them would be nice. The tech trade issue is one I am not really in favor of, but I have seen how vocal some people that post here about never, ever, under any circumstances what-so-ever allowing on/off options. Which I consider narrow minded. But HEY, luckily I don't make the decisions and will probably play Stellaris with or without the one option I like. Hoping it goes pre-order soon because Dark souls III is looking very tempting and I can't do both and get a new computer. Decisions, decisions.

Besides the issue of everyone getting the same tech one arguement against tech trade is that an important aspect in development is ones own exploration. Handing over technology one is unfamiliar with is inherently very risky as the reciever can very well make an enormous mistake and kill themselves. However if you stay by the side and guide them in their own research it's safer as then they learn the technology as it should be, with a helping hand by the side.

BTW: its not realistic: why would a winner of a war not plunder technology?

Because wars aren't waged to steal technology, but to get resources. Tech is plundered only if is somewhat better than what you have (no point in learning how to use bow and arrow, when you have access to beam weapons, right?). Also, the one with the most advanced tech usually wins. ;)

I agree - it was too easy to win in DW when you had tech trading on - why research certain branches when you were likely going to be able to trade for them. And when I had a good ally in a mutual defense pact I usually got their tech up so they could cover my back. Rather not have that temptation.

Tech and information are probably the only commodities interstellar empires would bother trading, forget 'exotic caladanian spice wine' or 'bjondax whale fur'. Gameplay-wise, tech trading and tech brokering would ruin the game.
