From my experience Crusades, Jihads, and Great Holy Wars compelled everyone from the defender's religion to join the defender. Now to me it seems that it is rarer for members of the same religion to show the same solidarity they had before the latest patch. Therefore Holy wars are among much fewer members, which makes it easier to acquire more territory since one does not feel the full wrath of the defender's religion. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this as well or not?

Oh, it's definitely still around (I had almost the entirety of Scandinavia attack my Irish-Anglo-Khazar alliance when I holy-warred for the eastern half of Iceland), but I think that Conclave generally increased realm chaos. Other realms tend not to join in if they're distracted.

What pisses me off is that they've apparently removed the opinion buff for joining a non-allied ruler's war. I helped France retake Poitou from the Umayyads last night and the ungrateful frog bastard promptly joined the anti-Alba defensive pact after the war was over. Oh well, at least I made a profit looting Muslim castles.

There's a diplomatic distance factor at play so far as I can tell - if for example the Kingdom of Jerusalem is held by someone who also has lands in the Catholic heartland a lot of neighbours will show up. The Miaphysites do the same in Africa (though even combined they struggle to stop the caliph) and I usually find even quite distant Muslims turning up to defend in the Levant. But if you're away from your co-religionists maybe the news travels too slow by troubadour and rumours in the ports.

The AI does not join when it's fighting another war but otherwise pretty much everybody happily joins in in my games, like all of the counts of Brittany defending Asturias against Umayads.

Also regularly see that but assumed it was down to being only two sea areas away so closer (for AI diplo purposes) than you might think.

Yeah, now you mention it I don't think I've ever seen the dukes from England actually defending Asturias although I certainly saw pretty much all of the british isles defending against an holy war for an English duchy...
