Working as designed. Sea provinces need to be connected, and there's no plausible way for Abbysinian ships to get into the Mediterranean. Though it'd be nice to have ships around in the Gulf and the Red Sea, the AI can't handle it.

It'd be nice if Paradox would upgrade the AI so it could handle this sort of thing. If I were them I'd be embarrassed every time somebody says "the AI can't handle it," and I've read that about a billion times on this forum.

Sorry for my ignorance but what exactly is stopping the AI from "handling it"? Simply making the red sea sailable wouldn't break anything surely?
having separate sea zones confuses the AI.
what Ck2+ does is it makes the red sea connected to the Mediterranean sea as if there's an ahistorical canal in Suez (technically it's not ahistorical for ships from the red sea to cross to the mediterranean anyway, but the vessels were likely dragged partially overland at some point or another).

well.. Ethiopians haven't merceneries either... nor does Mali. pretty much a shame :S

They can have same mercs as any other Christian realm (and in case of Mali, same as any other Muslim realm). Problem however is that distance between capitals of Axum and Abyssinia and capitals of the mercs is too big. If you move capital of Abyssinia into Alexandria you can hire Bulgarian mercenaries and if you move it to place like Constantinople or Rome then you can hire anyone you like.

I have suggested adding a couple of mercenary companies in East Africa, as well as moving the Tuareg companies south so as to give Mali better access.

These ideas may make it into 1.08b, but of course they may not.

Mercs are mercs technically, broadly. It can be stuff like the Varangian guard, so for Africans that could be desert or other tribes (Beduins should go at least as far south as Nubia, IMHO).

How about adding ports in Abyssinia (e.g. as a different line of buildings but just looking and called the same) to make the seaside provinces richer without allowing ships?
