Alright, so I'm playing as Rome, and I've noticed this several times: sometimes when I try to trade from one of my ports to a foreign port, it says no route found. The latest example is an attempt of mine to trade grain for wood from Syracusae to Rhodes. They do of course have a slot free, as do I. Is there something I have overlooked?

I'm struggling to understand the logic of how valid trade routes are determined as well. Sometimes it makes sense to me while other times I'm left going "Huh?" when it tells me no valid route exists. Can anybody explain how trading paths are computed/determined? I'm sure there's some rhyme or reason behind it but sometimes I can't seem to figure it out!

You don't need a harbour to trade overseas.

I've had the same problem, but on at least one occasion I worked out why... the province I was trying to trade with was actually occupied by the enemy of that country. You could see that on the political map, but not the trade map I was looking at...

Yeah, I thought that might be it, or maybe that their port was blockaded, but I checked, and they weren't even at war.

I'm still baffled at why sometimes trade routes work and sometimes they don't - also I have seen AI-initiated trades work fine, when I was told I could not start a trade route between the very same provinces! What gives?

You can ask 3rd party countries to grant access for your merchants to trade through thier lands, maybe that has something to do with it.

Find trading difficult when playing Rome, everybody dislikes me... envy is a sad thing :)

i agree, i have the same problem. sometimes it just doesn't make sense to me why it says 'no route available'. a FAQ would be helpful as the manual and the strategy guide apparently don't do it justice.

I think Kringsat81 has the right idea. It seems that the available routes are not bi-lateral.

Meaning, that if you do not have a clear path to your potential partner, but your partner has a clear path to you, then you cannot initiate a trade, but they can.

So far, I have had a pretty hard time getting those paths. There always seems to be some holdout that will not grant my merchants the right to pass through their territory. Usually, it seems that an offer comes to me within a few months though, so it hasn't been TOO much of a problem, so far.
