I would order it before christmas as much as on February 30th. Unfortunately I couldn´t order on January 31st, since this day doesn´t exist.

What calendar are you using?
In my calendar February 30th doesn't exist, but January 31st does...

Are you serious? Ok Victoria wasnt as bugged as CK, but still there are things in Victoria that havent been fixed. (And I am not, IMHO, talking about estetic things).

I didn't find it extremely buggy. IMO, it worked quite well. I have had 2-3 CTD's tops.

Yes, it was stable, but 1.01 included several gamebreaking bugs. For example:

1) German and Italian unification were broken
2) The economy was unbalanced to the point where industrialization meant you had money coming out your ears after 15 years regardless
3) Population growth was bugged - billion man Russian Empire?
4) As opposed to #1, non-industrial economies were impossible and would go quickly bankrupt, even if historically prosperous
5) AI would not trade claims among itself, so usually only the player could actually claim colonies
6) You could turn colonial manpower into millions of first line troops, giving human Denmark armies larger than Russia
7) Little immigration

I could go on, but Vicky, while stable, had several terrible bugs and balance issues upon release.

Since it would appear to me that Paradox is hoping that HOI 2 will be a "blockbuster" (especially since it's being promoted so much, 5 screenshots even before beta), I think one of the biggest mistakes they could make, aside from releasing an unfinished game, would be not to release for the holidays. As Victoria showed, if the initial release is a flop, the game will end up being a flop (in sales). They should shoot for before Christmas, but if they can't release a finished product, they should definitely wait. If they don't release a finished product by Christmas, I'm sure sales will hurt.

if the game is based more or less on HoI 1, can anyone tell me how much time is being saved in the development stage? after all, they have less research to do, hopefully some code can be reused, i'm sure many of the AI algorithms can be used as well. if they have realized significant savings there's no reason why they shouldn't have it out by christmas.

Yes and no since they have been quite vague, which to me is better than tattooing a release date on your bicep. Thinks can always go differently.

Also at least Vic and CK got released at different dates in different regions, sure it's called release if you release in Scandinavia but can it be hyped as release in American dominated games media?

That all depends on what you consider the actual "release" to be. If Paradox decides to make the game available for web purchase, as CK was, then it will get reviewed well before it gets boxed and put in software stores by a publisher. In any case, I cannot believe that a game which is just about to begin beta testing in early August will be ready for release by Christmas.
If they are thinking that way, maybe I should reconsider my application to be a beta! ;)

I would buy it whenever it came out, sure that patches would fix any flaws.

Same here, I would buy the game even thought I am a mac user, so I have to buy a Wintel machine just to play it as well. Then I am very confident in the way Paradox fixes their bugs and the rate of patches. Never had any problems with Victoria, EUII or HoI the way they did it for those titles.

Paradox should be an example for the industry to follow. Both in the choices they make over a title and the way they release them.

I think Paradox should really be carefull about the initial quality unless they want to stay in their current "niche" forever.
Of course I would buy HoI 2 if it was released by X-mas. But would other "non P-dox-fanboy" wargamers buy it in significant quantity?

I feel that the initial point of this thread - about game mags and reviews - is a crucial argument for patience and a long enough beta-phase.

HoI2 is a game that will be seriously affected by the reviews it gets in the gaming magazines. It will certainly - and sadly - not be a game that sits in the top shelves of the department stores by the hundreds.
So people have to be made aware of the options HoI 2 offers by interesting and positive "media-coverage".

The dedicated and competent player-community of Paradox should be able to provide excellent beta testers. (Just think of the manual project, the AI improvement people, the modders etc. + Math Guy :D )

P'dox should really make use of this unique "tool" and use the dedication of all these people to shape the "perfect" game for the final breakthrough.

Take your time!

I think a christmas release is also very important for the customers.

Why ?
Holidays holidays and holidays.....long cold nights... :D

I can handle the updates to fix the gaming issues but I had alot of problems with CTD in both HOI and Victoria (saving every 20 mins). I will be very happy whenever its released and buy it no matter what but I'd like that issue to be resolved. I run a pretty moderate sytem and haven't had issues with any FPS which have much tougher hardware requirements.

Can't be your system specs. I have virtually the same and I CTD only while loading a saved game and maybe once every two evenings of gaming. Maybe some driver issues (like I would know)?

On-Top: I will preorder the day I hear that I can on E-butik, whether before or after christmas. HOI has given me so much pleasure that I'll buy HOI2 blind ... something I usually never do ... I usually wait for the first user reports or a friend to give me a first non-professional impression ...

Game-balancing will improve over time, and I also believe that in principal the same problems as in HOI1 will be known and adressed ...
Bugs ... they'll always be there but we've got so many hard-working Betas, I have trust they'll (Paradox) be able to ferret out the critical ones fairly early.

As for the release date ... the publisher(s) might have a word to say on that ... unfortunately they might see it as "a game sold is money earned" ... christmas as a release would make the most sense for them ... if HOI2 fulfills the minimum stability criteria they might just throw it on the market, cash-in and hope for the best ... which I of course would not like to see but sadly happens more frequently these days ... but hey, I'm a pessimist by nature, don't let me spoil the mood :D

When we talks about specs...
I found this on Panvisions homepage:

Hearts of Iron 2
Minimum spec: Pentium 3, 800 MHz, 128 mb RAM memory.

Recommended: Pentium 4, 1200 MHz, 512 mb RAM memory.

Pretty interesting... I´ve got a pretty old Celeron 1000mhz.... Maybe time to buy a new one...
