just played a few years as spain. 1 thing that really stood out was the apparent lack of naval attrition. i sent 14 ships exploring the entire caribbean and most of the east us coast b4 headin back to spain for the loss of 0 ships.

dunno how realistic this is but i know that in EU2 the ships wouldnt have lasted nearly as long.

any thoughts?

Yeah, I took an expedition of 6 ships, with Colon, came back with 3, and only 9% attrition. Also, note that there is no more friendly water bonus, so you should get your arse into port whenever you aren't blockading or battling.

Umm... how do you explore? I sent a ship out towards North america but basically found the "end of the earth" and couldnt go any farther.

I know Im missing something really obvious but I cant find it?

You have to hire an explorer. They are the only units that can explore ocean regions. I think you can make a fleet explore as long as one of the ships in your fleet is an explorer. I haven't had the demo up and running yet, or I would give you the exact steps. I'm sure someone else will jump in and explain if you have to go through the advisors window or through the military window or something. Good luck.

PS - If your explorer drops off the end of the earth, you should probably report it. :rofl:

I don't think if Columbus lost all his ships he could send a pigeon back to let them know ;)

All Castille could do is send more explorers.

This actually is a huge balance issue...

I started the game as portugal (who btw starts with cotnw). I took 3 barques which I started the game with, added the explorer I started with and proceeded to sail to america. Without returning to port I went all the way from current-day maineish down the east coast of north america, down around south america, back up, to alaska, back down to california, around to Japan, over to Australia, around austraila, and back to port in Lisbon. All this with a 5% attrition rate and in about a year. THAAAAATS realistic...

When you combine this with the fact that territories are known relativly quickly by all other nations after you explore it... kinda takes all the magic of exploring and colonizing the new world.

strager i couldnt agree more. most of the games ive played in EU2 have been as a colonial power as thats what i prefer but it appears that paradox have simplified this side of the game, maybe to appeal to more casual players i dunno.

i know that in EU2 the AI wasnt affected by attrition cos it couldnt handle it properly but i thought it was spot on, u really had to think n plan where u were gonna explore.

with the system in place now most of the americas will be explored within a few years :( the mystery of explorin n colonizing is defo gone.
the game sure looks nice but it does feel like playin a glorified EU2 with afew features added n removed.

this is a game breaker for me and i really hope maybe a patch will bring back more realistic attrition although by the looks of this thread most people seem happy enough with it as it stands

To change the balance, I also insist on fixing an early sea attrition/exploring/colonizing issue. Among some minor bugs, annoying but not affecting gameplay itself, this one looks like a real gamebreaker. Maybe in the full version it's different :confused:

but is this attrition a bug/demo thing or is it working by design cos ive read other people sayin they get attrition. someone also said that their ships just disappeared in the middle of the ocean! that just sounds daft.

EU2 had the exploring/attrition level nailed, hopefully this is just a bug/demo thing.

maybe a moderator can comment on this?

I cannot agree more with the general tone of the thread.

- It is waaaay to easy to explore

- Fleets can stay in the sea for too long

- The advantage of being the first to discover new land doesn't have any game impact as the general access to those territories is too fast. In fact, any country, even a landlocked one, without a single ship can colonize the new world as it is now. It just need some settlers.

I am a bit baffled to this particular aspect of the game. I can only hope this was implemented this way for the DEMO....

Could it be that the naval attrition have been reduced in the demo version to make it a bit easier to explore, and hence try the colonization asspect of the game while still playing within the reduced timeframe?!?

Relating to that, it would be nice if we were told what was tweaked in the demo as compared to the full version. I.e. are all the events in demo that are in full version, or just a small subset?

There is attrition, it is just a random event. My fleet in the gulf of Venice lost two ships during the two years it was parked there.

Naval Attrition:

Now works differently in EU3 than it did in EU2. You'll notice that the weather effects and slow monthly attrition gain are gone. Instead, each time you enter a new sea zone or are in one at month end, there's a random chance that each of the ships in your fleet will suffer attrition damage. IIRC in the demo the chances range from a few percent in coastal waters to about 10% in open ocean. If a ship fails the "die roll" it will lose 25% of its strength, so it can survive 4 such hits before sinking. To repair damage, go to a friendly port and wait a while (iirc monthly repairs is around 5% or 10% in the demo).

This will be tweaked somewhat in the release version and future patches to get the balance to the intended values (extremely hard to get exactly the right values considering the many variable, but we're much closer now than we were).


Naval Exploration:

In the demo it's too fast (not sure if a value got transposed somewhere incorrectly or if something else is at play) but will be slower in the release version. A good leader (naval explorer) will speed up the process somewhat. Note that you gain naval tradition when exploring which you might want to use to hire even better explorers (the same applies to land tradition being gained when roaming through terra incognita with conquistadors).


Map Spread:

In the demo version the spread of maps is a bit faster than intended, and is further complicated by the mechanism that governs it. It's been severely tweaked in subsequent builds. In the final gold release the fastest you'll get someone else's map is 25 years after its original discovery. (Also note that you can no longer trade maps as a diplo option, nor do you get another country's maps when you capture its capital).
