I guess my issue is that byzantium wasn't a fuedal society, yet it's in. Granted, islam would be a bit different, but not unbearably so.

Byz wasnt feudal. feudal society requires a distinct military/noble class, this didnt exist in byz until close to the end.

Let's not stick to the strict and rigid definition of "feudal". Flexibility is the key to understanding such a complex social, political and historical phenomena as Byzantium. One of the reasons a classical classification doesn't apply to the Greek Empire is the fact that most of its population was concentrated in Constantinople. So, the traditional distinction aristocrat-serf is inoperable here. But Byzantium was a theocracy. And theocracies are anything but modern societies. Well, in my book if it's not modern its either post-modern or feudal.

If its not modern its feudal????? how did come to that gross simplification. Forget modern comparisons. Byz does not reflect the feudal institutions of western europe in the, say for example, 12th century. therefore it is not feudal by that definition. If you claim that it is feudal because it is not modern or post modern then surely Aztec society, West African tribal societies and the Welsh are feudal as well.
