It was introduced in 1.29 (Golden Century) and discontinued after 1.31 (Leviathan). I thought it was Leviathan's premature problem. But now, most of the African countries are missing proper introductions even though they're protagonists of the DLC.

Was the player feedback for this feature was bad?

Hmm, this is very interesting actually. I don't mind those opening start-up screens as they give you an overview of what you're going to be going into. But, if they cost precious dev time, I can see why they were axed.

I don't want to sound overly negative, but it is not "precious dev time", it is the quality of the finished product. It is a small thing, but PDX games have a lot of small things that are left unpolished and give the impression of constantly rushed development (it is probably not just an impression :p).

In the case of EU4, I do agree they have much bigger problems to care about though. I love PDX games, but god they do need a new development model... Stellaris seems to be doing much better since they introduced their "custodian team", I think it should be generalized across their titles.

This is maybe an afternoon after the research that goes into the mission trees, they really should have stayed

How could they cost ANY dev time? Its just typing into a already existing window. You don't need to research anything, since you already know the region from mission and province researching. They cant write 10 sentences off the top of their head in 15 minutes and run it trough a spellcheck?

They already typed useful information at mission trees and startup events in Ethiopia, Mutapa, and Mali. So I thought, write down that information plus some of the things that couldn't make it into the game. That will make some trivia fans like me happy, players will empathy more easily into the nation they're going to play, and the game will look more complete.

Yes, it will make take some development time, but they've already researched it. Typing it down is seems somewhat easier to me. And they could've got a player suggestion if they want.

If somebody were to start a thread in the suggestions forum that collects improved/updated texts for the startup screens, would the devs be interested in using that material?
I am certainly not saying that I would be willing or able to type this for all countries currently missing texts, but I would be very much interesting in participating in a "crowdsourcing" effort.

After the 1.33-beta devs had added a startup screen for most of the Leviathan and Origin DLC's target nations. Even though the support was not that great I'm surprised that devs did all the hard work for so many nations.

Thanks, devs! I've made this reply to send my huzzahs toward the devs :)

I don’t know for sure, but I wonder if part of the problem is that analytics on their side show that the startup screen gets very little use? I personally have never had it open for more than two seconds after a fresh install; I tick “don’t show this again” and forget about it.

Personally, I always read it.
That’s cool, I’m glad people get use out of it.

But, forgive my scepticism, always? I thought it was region-based, so (apart from majors) most tags get basically the same startup screen anyway. Are you telling me you reread the same information over and over every time you start in North America, the Middle East or Central Asia? When you restart again and again for better rivals as Byzantium? When you’re firing up the 818363th game as France for a relaxing playthrough?

Maybe I’m wrong, but I find it really hard to believe it gets a meaningful amount of use.

I have only had 20 runs starting from last year, when I returned to the game after 7 years of absence, so yes, I have read it for every campaign. Besides, it's not a very long text anyways. I guess it gets repeating after like 100 runs, but not after 20 lol.

I am also nearly always reading it (of course not if I had a recent run with the same text) and find it very appealing, mainly for Backstory part, although the practical hints can also be good reminders of mechanics at least.

Cool they at least now added a bit for the newest content
