What is the difference between serial and paralel runs in production?

I imagine a paralel is building 4, say, squadrons at once, and serial is build one after another. Buuuuuut, this would mean serial production would take forever. Unless you plan ahead and runs several production items (some tanks, inf and planes) 'paralel' in serial (everybody still with me) therefore creating effiency gains?

Hi Marcus,

From the manual:

Serial Run - Multiple, identical items to be manufactured sequentially. Serial orders take much longer to fill but spread out the drain on manpower (if needed)...and a require only a small drain on IC.

Parallel Run - multiple identical production orders at a time. A series of identical orders and each of the units will be manufactured at the same time. Parallel orders will rapidly deplete your manpower (if needed) and demand much larger IC commitments.

There is a gearing bonus to serial orders, which reduces the amount of time required (and thus IC).

This is an abbreviated version of what is in the manual. I have not tested this in game conditions yet, as I don't leave the office for another 30 minutes!

Cheers,

Can somebody comment on the gearing/serial run further. It seems to me like in 1936, I should start a serial run of infantry. Say something like 1000 divisions! ;-) That would allow me to produce infantry as cheaply as possible over the length of the war.

This brings up a question. If you build a division, and while it's under construction an upgrade is available, does it automatically get upgraded, or does the unit come out as you built it?

There is a point where the cost of upgrade > savings of gearing bonus. Also there are industrial techs to lower the starting cost basis. All in all, the strategy of starting a serial run and leaving it likely won't be the best. Also, consdier if you have the manpower to build 1000 div's of INF. :)

The gearing bonus is capped at 35% (modified by one of the domestic policy sliders). So after the seventh unit you don't get more benefits. And the cost & time for serial production are not updated when they are reduced by techs, sliders or minister changes. So, it needs careful planning ahead to produce the most with your IC.

Is this a sort of a "prototyping phase", where I keep the bonus for
subsequent units, eg. I launch a massive parallel order of T-34's after
an initial serial run reaches the 35% mark? Or could I maybe tap up the
number on a serial run after building up enough manpower to increase it
(I have 300 manpower, I start a run of 30 infantry divisions, I increase it
to 31 when I have 10 manpower again)?

So what's the benefit of parallel production?

you get the units at one time. fx. ordering 10 infantry units in a paralles run will give you 10 ready division to deploy at full price of course.

doing 10 division on serial you get one af the other and the further you get down the line the cheaper they will become. The downside to serial production is that you may develop never models of the unit but the ones produced will be the model choosen when the order was placed.

Right,

So what if I order 10 Panzer divisions in serial and get them at 100-95-90-85-80-75-70-65-65-etc. cost and then order another in paralel 10 ? do I get them all for 65 %. In other words, does my Krupp Discount Card stay valid? Thank you for shopping Krupp, would you like to Super Size your order with a nice Artillery Brigade?

but can you cancel an order? I mean I could just order seven of everything and if during that time I discover a newer mosel, I just scrap the old serial run and start a new one, right?

Yeah, it only takes the MP when the next unit starts building, BUT if you cannot afford the MP (or if the serial build falls below 100% eff) the gearing bonus will reset.

Nope, it's more like a run at a printers, you've got to specifiy the size of the order up front and once it's done it's done.
