What do you think the next expansion will entail?

I’ll do a semi-thorough speculation of the road map to place my bet.

These are all the possible things they’re working on, so let’s go step by step.

Major Expansion or Flavor Pack?
This question has an easy answer for me, the last major release was the Fate of Iberia, a Flavor Pack. They’ve said openly they’re alternating, which means whatever it is they’re working on now must be a major expansion.

Mechanics or Encompassing themes?
The DD gave us a big list of points they want to hit in CK3 in the future, however in my opinion, each individual docket item doesn’t have to be it’s own independent expansion, they could all be mechanics they’re exploring many of which can be included in one expansion. Royal Court for instance brought us the RC, Artifacts, and Cultural overhauls, three unrelated but woven together mechanics. I’m willing to bet that each “room” in the road map will be part of a similar mosaic for the expansion they come up in. This begs the question, however, do room positions matter? Are rooms closer together more likely to come out in the same expansion? In my analysis I will factor room closeness as an element, but will not say that it is a clear cut rule, as we simply don’t know.

What the hell are we getting then?
The DD was suspiciously candid about Byzantine flavor will be part of a major expansion rather than a flavor pack. Given the fanbase’s undying love for everything Eastern Rome, my bet this is coming sooner rather later. Details included in the DD talked about Imperial mechanics overhaul as well. Talked about having Byzantines play different than HRE, and having both play different than the Abbasids. It’s only natural that in the Byzantine Flavor/Imperial Government expansion, the Empire rework comes out as well. My theory is that Empires will have different mechanics based on government type, with the HRE getting some support as well. This way they can add flavor, and keep the sandbox nature of major expansions by giving imperial/clan/feudal/tribal/HRE different imperial mechanics from each other, but the same so the Abbasids and the Ottomans have the same Imperial Mechanic. This is my sure bet as to what’s coming out next, but I don’t think that’ll be it.

One more?
i honestly can see them including one, two at most other mechanics in the expansion I described, but I don’t know for sure which so I’ll give odds to the ones I think are most likely.

50% chance “Laws” - the DD expressed annoyance at the simplicity of Law Mechanics currently in the game, I’d say it’s pretty likely an update in government types also updates Laws. They also expressed a desire to overhaul war, but I think this is more likely in a future Crusade update than in an Imperial focused one.

25% chance “Clans” - If I’m right and the Imperial mechanics are tied to governments, then chances are above average that Clans will be touched up as well. I’m much less sure about this though.

10% Chance “Alliances” - I think it’s likely in a government-centered update we could get a touchup on alliances as well. This also fits into the Clans part, as alliances in the Islamic world were very different from those in Europe. This loses certainty because if I’m wrong about Clans, chances of alliances being touched up drop dramatically imo.

5% chance Religion - Could receive some love, but I honestly think it’s more like to come in the aforementioned “Crusades” update I’m assuming is separate from this one.

However, the next Expansion is leaning towards the roleplaying side of the game. Without revealing too much we’re focusing in large parts on reinforcing the connection between map and character. The theme is not one that has been the subject of an expansion in previous iterations of CK - to make things extra clear; we’re not doing trade, imperial/byzantine mechanics, nomads, or similar this time.

I'm afraid you're going to spend at least the next year seeing people trying to find cryptic clues in the floorplan layout that reveal your secret, planned release order for those themes :)

I once speculated, that they might give very event a location and let rulers travel their realm outside of war times. But I'm nnot sure, if this is the way they will go.

What does it even mean?

RP rather than Mechanics?

Does anything in the roadmap even apply to that, obviously the flavor pack hints do, but all the major expansion points are heavily mechanical and less roleplay. The Warfare part of the DD describes it could be more character driven, perhaps that ties into “map+character”? Perhaps the next expansion is the warfare update ties with an events update that will add more geographically appropriate events depending on where your character is physically on the map?

I can’t believe I missed something so obvious as the NO IMPERIAL at the begining of the post lmao.

I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring what we know:

Roleplay themes
not done as an expansion before now
connection between map and character (similar language to how they described royal court)
will probably affect everyone and not just certain region

while it could be a wandering court i think that's too similar in mechanics to the last expansion, so my guess is...
A roleplaying themed warfare expansion
Siege events, Battlefield duels, interact with the locals, loot towns steal artifacts, maybe a little 3D army camp to interact with if we're feeling ambitious

I think the logic went like this: They released the royal court which handles what your character does when they're at peace and at home. So now we need an expansion for the other half of the game for what your character does when they aren't at home and off conquering. Could be wrong but I really can't think of what else it could be and I'm a bit suspicious that we have a dueling mechanic in the game right now, but it doesn't interact with the warfare almost like they knew a warfare flavor expansion was coming at some point

I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring what we know:

Roleplay themes
not done as an expansion before now
connection between map and character (similar language to how they described royal court)
will probably affect everyone and not just certain region

while it could be a wandering court i think that's too similar in mechanics to the last expansion, so my guess is...
A roleplaying themed warfare expansion
Siege events, Battlefield duels, interact with the locals, loot towns steal artifacts, maybe a little 3D army camp to interact with if we're feeling ambitious

I think the logic went like this: They released the royal court which handles what your character does when they're at peace and at home. So now we need an expansion for the other half of the game for what your character does when they aren't at home and off conquering. Could be wrong but I really can't think of what else it could be and I'm a bit suspicious that we have a dueling mechanic in the game right now, but it doesn't interact with the warfare almost like they knew a warfare flavor expansion was coming at some point
Yeah and perhaps they’ll separate the map into regions for regional specific events as well, similar to Godherja’s regional hunting areas?

I thought the Flavor Pack/Expansion order altering was within "expansion passes". IE, they would announce a new expansion pass and the next paid content piece would be a Flavor Pack, then expansion then another flavor pack.

That said I think this would be old news and it's clear since Fate of Iberia PDX management has rethought DLC practices (notably with the price increase/accepting that flavor packs are bigger than perhaps originally intended) so I don't know if we can expect the same pattern.

I'm pretty sure it's tying events and locations. And yeah, itinerant courts can easily be part of that.

I implemented the [barebones] of this for a mod I'm doing: traveling, itinerant courts, staying-at-home.

I'm 10% upset because "whine-whine I wanted to do it" but 90% happy because this is NOT the main focus of my mod and if THEY make it it should work more "natively", meaning faster / fewer bugs / less hassle.

Frankly, I’m tired of the lack of Dev Diaries! For example, I planned on posting my cat’s Oltner cosplay on the post today.

Curse you, Paradox! Now my mood is as black as your CK3 studio name! No amount of DLC, no matter the focus, will fix this!

(Jk, I have no idea what the next DLC is. I just hope there are no more crimes against cats.)

They mentioned they were working on an expansion, not a flavour pack, and that means that I imagine it would be something more like Royal Court where it affects everyone on the map rather than just a single region. My guess is that it might be something related to going exploring in your own realm? Either that, or exerting control on your realm in new ways.

That said considering it's something that's never recieved attention in a previous expansion, it's also something that I think is gonna be particularly difficult to guess

I don't know why the next major DD would be an expansion announcement. Wouldn't it be covering the 1.8 free patch instead (the one that is planned to come out by the end of the year)?

I hope it's the return of Conclave mechanics. Council is pretty boring right now and could definitely use the RP injection that would come from giving it more power.

Connecting map and character? It's clearly an expansion on what started with Royal Court. Next expansion will allow us to wander around the map in a full 3D open world simulator, with VR support too. PDX has to attract those M&B, Skyrim and Witcher crowds after all. :rolleyes: :p

More seriously, maybe characters who travel will now do so on the map and get events connected to their current location, rather than just doing it by event.
