The Kingdom of Badajoz
Session 4
Not as much to report in this session. I had a lot of minor things fixed with my nation: counties returned, capital moved, vassals removed/ added. I also saw the loss of James who had been playing Cordoba.

My plan was to consolidate my realm, with the only external expansion being the conquest of the remaining county in Murcia. With my capital moved to Cadiz in Seville I began creating my powerbase, knocking out counts in the area to gain direct control myself, creating a new barony in Cadiz. This was very succesful but saw me at war for quite some time as i fought Valencia whilst also knocking down internal rebellions from those who avoided my imprison.
My king was pretty damn garbage, which was reflected by the formation of 2 very powerful factions for Council Power and a Pretender. I managed to delay it for some time with some tactical imprisonments and assasinations, but it did eventually fire. This saw the whole duchy of Cordoba and part of Cuenca and Toledo revolt and though it did look fairly dicey, my own army managed to put it down, with Republic of Aquitaine assisting to lay the fatal blow to their armies.
This revolt was actually the best thing that could have happened to me:
  1. I replaced disloyal vassals with loyal, tax paying ones
  2. I broke up the more powerful vassals,
  3. I took counties and baronies for myself in Seville
  4. I imprisoned, revoked, and banished a large number of disloyal lords, purging my court of them, and earning myself a large amount of money too...
  5. Who could also not join other factions
The rest of the session saw the strengthening of relations with the Two Aquitaines and the build up of my realm. My ruler was a damn good one and at the age of 42 would hopefully last me some time, though my heir is even better.
I now feel secure in Europe with just my own very large army that is still growing plus my allies in the 2As.
Next session will probably see the dissolution of Galicia who is absent and saw his realm completely fall apart plus the final consolidation of the Seville Duchy
I also had some advice from Fim. r.e. how to best administer my realm so will start implementing that.

Out of curiosity, what is the map graphics mod people are using? Example, the one in Ranger's posting? It looks really good and I would love to use it.

Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, I believe?

Yeah what Fim said, it's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. I find it looks quite nice.

Map Update #3 861

TdKdYff

mWBlZkY.png

Another Session another Mupdate.

Starting with England. The wall separating the Isles from the mainland has finally fallen, and no one has taken better use of the fact then our resident Camelot player Sancrois who managed to secure a marriage alliance with none other then the Holy Roman Emperor himself. With the help of the mainland in his back pocket, he successfully petitions the Pope to sanction an invasion of the Saxon invaders and claims the title of England (renamed Loegria) for himself. As for Scotland, he tightens his control over the outlying islands.

In Spain, Likewise with England, with the wall coming down introduced a new dimension of diplomacy for the players there, Golle and Hellbent teamed up with the two Aquataines on the other side of the Pyrenees and started to thoroughly dismember the Kingdom of Valencia leading to the borders you see here. Both of the Valencia players are moving for greener pastures as a result.

In France, Tazzo continues to reign supreme hosting the largest levy of any other player for two weeks straight. The Electorship of France continues to be the most powerful Player on the board, at least on Paper.

In Southern France, Limah the Duke of Aquitaine and Fimcomte, the Republic of Aquitaine (once again separated) spend their time expanding their fiefs down past the Pyrenees. Limah seems poised to create his own Kingdom, down in Navarra.

King of Men, feeling pressured by the swiss and his federation, and wanting to save his slot, did the only thing he could have to save it. A wild gamble to become emperor himself, voiding the concurrent wars for his lands. He plotted for his votes and pushed the young boy off a balcony, all seemed according to plan. However, votes got switched at the last possible minute, leaving the Dez Neigh Family in charge and angry. The result of which saw Austrasia King title dissolved and the slot deemed unplayable. King of Men spent the rest of the session in Denmark.

In Germany a Peace seems to have been declared between Hagbard's Saxony and Blayne's Franconia. With an excess of peace and a distracted Emperor however, he sees fit to move into the Emperors personal Fiefdom.

In Italy, The Perfidious duchy of Modena plotted to steal the Kingdom of Italy away from who they viewed as German invaders and rushed to consolidate the Emperors personal Lands for himself. Though successful for a time, if only because the Traitorous King of Austrasia had to be dealt with first, he could not escape the Emperors wrath, and met an untimely fate, stripped of his temporal gains. He current rots in the Prison of the Emperor, waiting his fate.

In Scandinavia we had three (four eventually) players start out in the traditional roles, Sweden, Norway, Lappland, and Denmark. With the front running coming out of the session being Sweden (Naxhi) having more land and more troops then the other three players combined. Unfortunately for them, the Norse faith had been previously reformed by a particularly Strong AI King of Denmark, so the players do not get any say in that front.

The Fallen:

My absolute favorite thing regarding Crusader Kings 2 is the fact that pagans can raid anywhere that has a coastline and has holdings. I mean, that's why anyone would want to play in Scandinavia in the first place. If you arent playing a Norse pagan ruler while in Scandinavia you are doing something VERY wrong my friend. You get super wealthy if you pillage the right places, the tribal status gives you access to a ton of troops (even if some people will argue that they arent strong), and you can dominate many a realm very easily with certain CBs.

Also, your characters look kick-ass, especially if they join the warrior's lode...

sACUzDx.png

BTW, this is Ale, King of Sweden. He isnt the brightest lad on the block, but he sure as hell can crack a skull or two if you tell him that. He also has a thing for both guys and girls (which is fine, you do you and such). But most importantly, he is one of the fiercest raiders in the known world, having sacked numerous cities. His father before him was just as strong, having sacked much of the eastern Mediterranean. His father died in a duel with some Greek though, earning him a proper spot in Valhalla. His son has continued his legacy, raiding and pillaging, and continuing to expand his realm to encompass much of what is today considered "Sweden". He also managed to secure alliances with the other Nordic lords.

Yet, the biggest challenge for Ale and his sons will not be whether or not that certain settlement on the Egyptian coast was already looted by some Berber pirates, its the fact that the game protection wall is coming down on Scandinavia. Yes boys and girls, the Norse can now interact with the Germans, French, Spanish, and English without fear of repercussion from Dragoon. Downside is, the Germans, French, Spanish, and English can interact with us as well. Which means big ole Holy Roman Emperor Khan may start moving north.

Hopefully that is not the case. Our lands are so bad in terms of wealth that we need to raid to stay afloat with money and prestige. It is our hope that it just isnt worth it to the Germans or French. But who knows.

Also, its officially, 100% raiding season. Problem is that everyone knows that so raiding may prove quite difficult if I have to deal with the giant ass armies everyone has stockpiled on the coast...

Bit of a boring session really. No real wars, some beating up rebels happened but otherwise it was just me building up and using my money for stuff that isn't war.

861-888: Albion Saved

It is the nature of history that, following a great feat or battle, there necessitates a long and arduous task of sieging and warring to establish dominion over your won lands. It was this task that occupied the rest of Prince Regent Malacresta’s reign through the combination of assisting Celtic rebels – such as Duke Dywel of Glywysing – and simply conquering the Saxon lands. When he passed away in 882 AD, Malacresta had completely united Loegria as well as reclaiming Camelot and Cornwall. Malacresta the Victorious was heralded by the court as the greatest Briton since the King had temporarily saved Britain from Saxon tyranny.

Whilst the bishops of Loegria wrote to Pope Stephanus IV, proclaiming the holy nature of their ruler and petitioning for his beatification, King Leofwine of Ireland and Wales sat in his castle of Builth, lamenting the position of his people. His father had lost all of the Saxon domains left in Angleland and Dumnonia, being crushed underneath the Briton onslaught, and had surrendered to the Irish demands for independence. Merely a year after ascending to the hollow throne of Ireland, Leofwine lost the last of his lands outside Builth to a further Briton conquest before Malacresta’s campaigns across Britain were halted in his old age. The Saxons enjoyed only a half-hearted celebration at the news of the Briton’s death as fears ran high throughout the court that the newly elected Prince Regent, Arthueu du Bedwyr, would seek to complete his father’s legacy and drive the Saxons out of their last bastion.

For a long time, however, that attack did not. Malacresta had died in late Autumn, forbidding an easy invasion by the Britons immediately. Distracted by a slow fever epidemic and general internal distractions of the court – mostly charactised by the phasing out of Saxons from court positions and attempts to remove Saxon land holders from most of Loegria – Arthueu found himself unable to deal with the last Saxon kingdom for some time, instead directing himself into a pursuit of science and research, culminating in – so it is said – the acquisition of an unholy artefact known as the Necronomicon.

But, in late 886 AD, a disease-free island and general peace allowed for Arthueu to make his final move, declaring war on King Leofwine in October of that year. By November, the Saxon kingdom had fallen in its small entirety to the Britons, finally ending the era of Saxon rule in Britain on the 17th of November 866.

But, the year before, tragedy struck when another European people, sensing the decline of the Saxons, had decided to impose their rule on Britain. The Republic of Florence, under the heel of house de Medici, set upon the Kingdom of Scotland and drove out the rightful queen, Uunis Circinn. Although the Britons and Picts were glad to see that Florentine rule was short lived, the de Medicis set up a puppet kingdom ruled by the doge’s cousin, Armando. Thanks to the unfortunate lack of marital relations, the Britons looked on in dismay during the conflict, only being able to send funds to the Picts against the invaders. Despite the tragedy of Pictland falling under Italian rule – and the removal of a dynasty from its century-old seat – Arthueu was not too fearful of a repeat of the Saxon invasions for his machinations against the invaders had already been set in place. Yet, whilst the island’s short-lived internal peace neared its end, envious eyes looked upon it from beyond the seas. A new era was about to come to the island, with a possibly renewed onslaught from the north facing the noble Britons.

Sardinia – Expansion of Trade

Sardinia in the year 821 was ruled by King Atenolfo. Sardinia at its time had a still rather small trade empire. But Sardinia was a Merchant Republic after all and so the only choice was to expand its trade. Under King Atenolfo this was achieved with direct investment of the crown into foreign trade.

It was decided to expand trade alongside the already existing trade zone. Trade posts at this time were existing inside all of Sardinia and in the foreign places of Tunis and Mahdia. This meant from a economic standpoint the choices were to expand trade either in the gulfe de hammamet, the coast of tripolitania, the malta channel, the strait de messina, the ponant, islas baleares, golfe du lion, cote d´ azur, ligurian sea or coast of rome.

Of these choices cote d´ azur and ligurian sea were not availabe as holdings there were completely controlled by rival merchant republics. Golfe du lion and coast of rome were similar cases in partial land control of merchant republics and so deemed to risky even though controlling trade with the pope would have been an honorable achievement. Islas Baleares was seen as a future conquest ground potentially and so investment in it was planned for the future. The malta channel and the strait de messina were similar cases like islas baleares and so construction there was seen as risky and on top strait de messina was seen as a trade zone in which heavy contest between merchant republics was expected and for now sardinia wanted to avoid trade conflict. The last 3 contenders were now gulfe de hammamet, the coast of tripolitania and the ponant. Of those 3 gulfe de hammamet was already controlled and so seen as a better fit if trade expansion had reached its limits. Ponant had the highest trade value in tax and so should been the prime target, but the coast of tripolitania included a Saharan trade post, which was seen as trade post of high value and so the tradepost was built in Tripolitania alongside the Saharan Trade Route. This trade post was supported a bit later by a trade post in Leptis Magna to control the majority of trade in the coast of tripolitania and in that fashion connect with the sardinian trade zone. When trade expansion could happen again, the ponant was sadly already mostly controlled by other traders and so the trade zone was expanded into the Gulf of Sidra and as such trade posts were built in benghazi and cyrenaica.

25 years after the begin of King Atenolfo´s rule Sardinia no longer had the trade zone with the highest trade value, but still the trade zone with the highest trade income, even though it was passed in highest trade value and highest trade income by the family of carcosa from the kingdom of aquitaine. Sadly through the catastrophe of a plague Sardinia had lost the leading position in having the highest income to the same merchant king as well and so even though the reign of Atenolfo expanded our trade, it had failed to improve the kingdom of sardinia at this moment.

-Insert Engineering an Empire intro Here.-

From humble pastoral beginnings, into the most powerful state in Eastern Europe. Their Feats of architectural design brought them fame and much needed defence against viking raiders and German invaders alike. In this episode we look at The Empire of Bohemia, on Engineering an Empire.

-Insert video of quite pastoral germany here-

Despite what it would come to look like in the high renaissance, Bohemia in 860 didn’t bear much resemblance to any modern state that we know of. Weak, pastoral, and in effect tribal, the Bohemian Kingdom would have to modernize rapidly to outpace its neighbors and claim its piece of Europe.

-Start video of wooden longhouse with man sitting on a high chair-

The Bohemian that lead the charge was Prokop the Great of house Von Wenceslaus, of zimní katedrála fame. This early warlord stripped Bohemia of its previously peaceful nature and forged a powerful Medieval Kingdom stretching from the Carpathian Mountains to the Elbe Heartlands.

-Video of weird guy with grey half beard and balding head-

RHG= Random History Guy

RHG: “Really King Prokop wasn’t so much a conqueror as an innovator. He formed some of the earliest medieval standing units of soldiers, that is professional troops, and used them to smash his enemies before they had time to raise troops out of the field, it was in a word, Glorious!”

-insert video of Skirmisher troops burning farmsteads and killing a tax collector in pastoral germany, sheep running in all directions -

RHG: “And the crazy thing was he didnt have to spend nearly as much as you might think to do it. He didn't offer these men immediate benefits that would bankrupt his treasury, no! He offered them land in newly conquered regions! This ensured he always had a fresh supply of able young men to fight his wars, and facilitated his subjugation of the Silesians.”

-Insert army of marching medieval troops armed with shields, pears, and simple helmets-

With an army of not merely conscripts but professional soldiers with a goal in mind and victory between them and their prize, the armies of Praha marched with vigor and step previously unseen. But that was not the only thing that made them special. Enter the Cuman general Karabirkli, the taskmaster who turned what would have been a ragged band of boys into a unit of professionals

-Insert video of clearly siberian man acting as Karabirkli-

RHG: “Karabirkli brought a little bit of the steppe with him to help his new king out. He brought the hit and run tactics and logistical denial that had worked for his tribes in Khazaria. His tactics worked even better in the Bohemian Heartlands because of the prevalence of forested hills where horses would have trouble staying with an army without taking predictable paths. This created units of skirmishers feared for their ability to ambush in the cover of darkness and harass without ever giving a true fight.”

-Insert video of Prokop’s men hiding on a hillside and ambushing an enemy as they make camp, dead scouts laying behind them-

The raiding tactics would prove devastating to the other tribes in the region, so used to the shield wall tactics of the day. And it only got worse as Prokop’s numbers grew.

-Insert scenes of scared badly armed actors being surrounded by angry well armed actors and obviously winning. Maybe a money shot on a dude being arrowed-

The Man From Carcosa

”On the Decade of Blood, Part II”, part Seven of the Secret History of the World series, authored by Father Giovanni, Miskatonic University Press, First Print on Seventh of July, Anno Domini One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Seven.

With the first blow against the Valencians having been indirectly dealt, the Thing-That-Gnaws-At-Reality Republic of Aquitaine turned to honor the second part of its dealings within Iberia...

The Old Crone of Badajoz had bartered with the Pope and secured a strong claim on Toledo, allowing her to push war upon the Valencians.
The Republic would render aid in rectifying the de facto state of the matter, as it would weaken the Valencians for the eventual coup de grâce.

While the War was not as easy as mopping up some Rebel Remnants, the Republics coffers are deep and its troop counts high.

The Fall of Toledo, was inevitable, as Valencians were isolated diplomatically, having turned on their fellow Iberians and could not garner interest from others inside the Holy Roman Empire.

Thus it was that The-Hungering-Maw-That-Is Hastur The Third, known as ‘the Wise’ would fulfill Its His bargains and be finally free to consume liberate Barcelona from Valencian oppression.

As Valencia had spent near all of their power in the War for Toledo, the Reclaiming of Barcelona was a quiet affair, in terms of battles.
Little to no resistance was offered by the Valencians, as Loyal Republican Troops occupied country-side castle, after country-side castle.

Eventually, the Valencians were forced to concede defeat and cede the stolen Gem of Aquitaine, back to the Republic.

It was a Mind-Rendingly-Terrible Glorious Affair, the Triumph at Barcelona.

The streets ran red with the blood of the defenders were filled with the jubilating populous, as they trembled in fear cheered when That-Which-Breaks-The-World Hastur the Third himself rode into the city, at the head of an entire legion of Horrors-Beyond-Reality Republican Pike.

While small scale-warring occured well into the future, it can be said that the loss of Barcelona would be the beginning of the true end of Valencia.
It would flail in its death throes for years to come, but it would never again rise to threaten the plans of Bringer-of-Hope-And-Despair Republican Doges of Aquitaine.

July Seventh, Anno Domini, Eight Hundred and Seventy Seven.

The House Von Einzbern.
A mere group of mortals, united in familial bonds.
They would barter with the House of Carcosa for the destruction of their neighbours.

The Nibelungs of Saxony.
Who in the past were worshipers of yet another powerless pagan god and had attacked the Von Einzbern ancestral lands.
Only thanks to the interceding of the Holy Roman Emperor, were the heathen menaces stopped and Thüringen returned to Von Einzberns.

Yet Gottfried Von Einzbern had a long memory. He remembered the butchery perpetrated by the Nibelungs and plotted revenge.

Vengeance would be His.
With the aid of That-Which-Lies-Beyond-The-Outer-Gates Republic of Aquitaine, whose professional soldiers could guarantee the defeat of the martial-minded Nibelungs, no matter the price.

Ten Cohorts, an entire Legion of Republican Pike would be sent to slaughter Saxons in Saxony, all in the name of profit.
The Saxon defeat was a foregone conclusion.

Little is known of what the price for such aid was.
At least House Von Einzbern has never disclosed it.

Last, but not least, House of Carcosa, after years of dominating the Republican Politics, enacted legislation to honor first of their House, with the Republic being renamed from Aquitaine to Carcosa and it's Coat of Arms... altered to a more fitting standard.

Blood and Scales
Scales of Lust

I first saw him at the reception for my coronation; a few slight glances from across the ballroom, several close brushes during the dance, a passing word whispered into his ear on the way outside. A quick meeting alone by a stream, followed by a return to his chambers.

I followed behind by several minutes, heart and mind racing at the acts to come, the attempt to not be caught only heightening my emotions. I manage to make it to his chambers unnoticed, and quickly slip into the door, slowing slightly to push the door shut with my tail.

It is then that I get my first good luck at King Marachar, laying seductively upon the bedding, red scales glistening in the torchlight, wings spread back and relaxed, claws neatly trimmed and darkly polished, eyes golden and glinting, fangs bared in a great smile.

It has been such a long time since being able to feel the embrace of another dragon that I stood there for several minutes, basking in the view before me, legs quivering and claws scratching up the stones beneath me.

“Enjoying the view?” he chuckled, patting the space on the bed beside him to beckon me over.

I grinned sheepishly, and moved closer, unable to quell the thoughts racing through my head. How good it would be to refresh the flight with a pure-bred draconic clutch – the pride of being able to fulfil my familial duty so early in my reign filled me with nearly as much bliss as the view before me.

“Nervous?” he asked, showing some concern in his eyes.

“Maybe a little. Just a bit... overwhelmed. The scandalous nature of this, in the eyes of these men, instills me with a bit of apprehension.” I stammer, a slight blush making its way through my golden scales. I take a seat at the edge of the bed, tail flicking back and forth along the floor.

“Worry not, my young queen. No matter what these men think, know that we are doing our duty to preserve the existence of our flight. In the end, this will strengthen both our houses.”

“You speak rightly. I hope the fruits of this labour will share in your great wisdom,” I reply, grinning slyly over my shoulder. I move further on to the bed, and run my claws down his side, feeling the roughness of the scales on his side, and the smoothness of the plates down his belly. He reaches his claws over to me and caresses the side of my face, and pulls me towards him. I close my eyes and open my maw, as his meets mine in a great kiss. Our tongues dance like swords in a duel as I emit a soft moan, barely able to retain my lust...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Panting, face completely blushed, I decide to take a break from writing about my lurid affair with dear Marachar in my journal. My steward knocks softly at my door, and I bid him to enter. We discuss the affairs of my newly formed kingdom of Navarra, and I bid him fetch my marshal to plan the next expansion push into Espania...

The legend of the eagle of the forest
(Fragment from an old polish legend)

In the south of Poland, near the small kingdom of Krakow, there was a hill called the Wawel, it was the home of a mighty dragon that terrorised the region. He would plow through the country side, killing the livestock, burning crops and houses and eating the young maidens.

The king of Krakow had only one child, a beautiful daughter. Afraid that the dragon would eat her, he chose to kill the dragon. He promised the hand of his daughter to whoever would kill the dragon.

Many strong warriors tried to fight the dragon, galvanised by the promise, but none succeed.

One day, a young warrior called Wahan walked through the forest in the mountains. He had lost is parents to the dragon and had sworn revenge.
wahan1%20copie.jpg

Wahan was a fierce courageous warrior, but he was not stupid. He knew the dragon could not be easily killed by men. He thus prayed to Perkunas, so that he would get the strength to slay the dragon.

The spirit of the forest heard him, and he knew the young men would become a great king. He chooses to help him in his quest to slay the dragon. Taking the form of an eagle, the spirit approached Wahan.

-Young warrior, I am the spirit of the forest. For too long my land has been plagued by the presence of a monster, the dragon of the Wawel. I can sense a greater purpose in you, and I think you can help free me from the creature.

The spirit then took out a few feathers from his wing and gave them to Wahan.

-This feathers will allow you to summon Perkunas lightning to strike the beast. Now go forth!

(Fragments missings)

Thus Wahan slew the dragon. The blood spilled and flowed into the river. The forest spirit told Wahan

-See the blood of the dragon coloring the river; follow it and all the land it touches shall be yours to rule as king.

vistula%20copie.jpg

(Fragments missings)

The tribes recognised is strength and united behind him, eager to have the mighty dragon slayer, the great spirit of the forest to guide them and protect them.

Damnation, no matter how something looks, it will always turn for ill. Or so it seems to Doge Theoderic. Just as soon as it seems like Italy could finally be wrentched from the clutches of the Invader, it was taken away. Of course Theoderic wasn’t going to actually join the revolt, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have welcomed the change in leadership. At least, with the power of the Modenans broken and their dynasty declared traitors, their land became free for the taking.

Theoderic coughed. Probably nothing.

However, it was worth noting that the hospitals were constantly overrun by sick patients. The local apothecary healers just couldn’t keep up. Perhaps more hospitals were needed. More likely, more temples. God was angry with Italy, something had to be done to rectify the situation. Maybe a pilgrimage?

Theoderic coughed again. This time harder. For the first time, he noticed a strange wart on the back of his hand that hadn’t been there yesterday. Probably natural, he’d get the court physician to check it out later.

And that damn Austrasian fool had gambled everything on a murder without actually sufficiently bribing the electors, and then decided that a revolt was in order. Of course Theoderic’s brother had left him to die alone before his untimely death, the Medici weren’t about to fight the entire HRE basically alone. Now whether the Swiss filling the void left by Austrasia’s mangled corpse was a good thing or not is yet to be seen, but at least it wasn’t further power for the Carcosans. The power seems to be fairly balanced in France, and that suits Italy just fine. If none of them are hegemonic, less chance they’ll beat up poor Florence.

Theodreic coughed again, much harder this time. He felt suddenly very heavy, and faint to the head, and he noticed blood on his handkerchief. He tried to call out to his guards, but his tongue felt heavy, and he found he couldn’t speak. He fell to the floor. The thick heavy door masked the sound, and the guards did not hear. He convulsed, once, twice, as his eyes rolled back into his head. Finally, he knocked over a vase and as it shattered to the floor his guards finally came bursting in, but by that point it was too late. Serene Doge Theoderic had died of yet another plague.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So yeah, that’s basically the session. Plague, plague, devestation, plague, dying of plague, and plague. Maybe you can sense a theme? I think there may be a theme. Unfortunately, not much happened to me personally last session, I mostly just got sick. Around me, however, the Empire was a little bit a lot on fire. King of Men made a bid for the Throne, lost out at the last second, killed the Emperor, and then got himself revoked and killed. Ursul of Modena tried to make a bid for Italia, lost, rebelled, and was crushed. Venice abandoned their slot again, and the encroachment into Iberia has begun. Mostly just time spent building buildings, tradeposts, etc, oh and did I mention dying of plague? I did that a lot.
