I already have a hard time understanding what the hell is happenning on the western front with counters, I can't even start to picture how it will go without them. I'd be like "ok people, i don't even care anymore, go forth and reproduce with those panzerdivisions because that's what it looks like you're doing".

Having done a fair amount of scientific statistical research myself (of course not regarding Paradox :D) it is rather possible that we (and i stress "we) who prefer counters to sprites might be in a minority since the active part of the forum certainly does not represent the majority of those who will buy the game.

However i simply don't understand what is so difficult about including counters in the game. I would have thought that making counters would be much easier than sprites, although i get the fact that most casual gamers like to use tiny models instead of counters they are not familiar with.

I hope that both would be included, without a need for a DLC, because that's just fair.

I have no problem with sprites as small DLCs but if counters are sold as DLC then that is where I draw the line.

Yeah, i agree. That's what i meant. Small sprite DLCs are fine for those who find that they require more detailed tiny images congesting the screen. But there have been counters in every HOI game as far as i can remember.

Seeing how the unit building is done with counter icons I'm surprised to read Pdox thinking that they are used by a minority. I would think that if players know the NATO symbols enough to build their divisions they'll be using them on the map as well.

I guess the sprite DLC were a big success, which is the only tangible number they can go by for possible sprite usage.

Just wanna say that they are called models not sprites.

I have always used counters. They convey a lot of information at a glance, something which is really important in a war game. Sprites don't tell me anything beyond "this is an infantry division." That and when you are zoomed in with sprites it is just one giant mess of things clipping and moving around with these cheesy little animations. In addition to more practical issues, I just like the appearance of counters more. I'm not a long-time, hardcore HoI fan either. I entered the series with HoI3: For the Motherland. I used sprites for maybe a month before I discovered I could get rid of them in the options, and I never looked back.

I can't imagine it would be that difficult to add NATO counters. It is just a small number of non-animated, 2D symbols. Far more work would go into animating 3D models of several different things.

Relating to that sprites are the default option in HoI3 means that the statistics are rather biased since the majority of people don't go to the options at first and I don't think that many new people know what counters and sprites are. So Paradox may very well get the statistics that the majority of players use sprites when they are the default option...

A lot of people sure are invested in disproving my opinion with anecdotes, I'm not really sure why.

1) Opinions, by definition, cannot be disproven.
2) Anecdotes are not evidence.
3) The numerical evidence needed to cause me to re-evaluate my opinion does not exist as we currently have no way to track it.

Perhaps you have not read my posts correctly and think I am arguing against including counters - this is not the case, I simply think more players use models than counters. Since this doesn't matter and cannot be proven or disproven I don't know anyone is taking the time to argue about it.

Feels like Darkrenown is trolling everyone. :(

HOI3 was pretty impossible to play without counters. But honestly, if HOI4 manages to do a better job with 3D models then I will not complain.

If you look at it from one perspective it'd probably be less time consuming to make counters than actual models, but yeah.

Wow, so much rage over absolutely nothing. The OP has misread a comment out of context. I'm pretty sure that the Paradox devs have previously stated that counters will definitely be in.

Personally, I think counter-users are a minority. Perhaps it can be one of the stats we track and we'll know for sure.

I'm pretty sure a minority use sprites because in HOI3 they don't display any information whatsoever (unlike in victoria, CK or EU).

Personally i found it was impossible to play with sprites in HOI3, and when i started playing, i didn't have any previous knowledge of counters or hardcore wargames in general.

I mean having all the information readily available when seeing the map is essential for any wargame ..

I think the problem here is that Darkrenown never stated in the beginning of the thread one simple sentence: HoI4 will have counters!
Instead his semi-sarcastic comments are making the matter even worse...

Other than that I think every HoI Player should trust paradox that there will definitely including counters as an option for any HoI game to come. A serious grand strategy wargame without counters doesnt even derserve the name!
