This post by podcat fills me with dread. If I want to play with miniatures, I'll play a tactical game getting out the 1/300 scale models on a tabletop. Without counters I'll not be playing. This is not "simplifying", it's not even "dumbing down", it's just plain dumb!

We plan to have NATO counters as an option eventually

Ok...
This can be interpreted in many several ways.

Here are two;

1. There are counters - but not NATO counters (yet)
2. There will be counters, they are not done yet

Why do people assume the worst all the time?

Hey, have some faith in humanity! You forgot option 3:
3. Sold as a $19.99 separate Day 1 DLC.

YEAH! 2-D sprites have no business in a 3-D game.:p

Fortunately, Paradox has already declared victory over sprites by replacing them with 3-D models since at least CK2.

I even think that the majority of HoI3 players play with Nato counters. Sprites are ugly and 3D models would be still out of place. It looks fine for Total War games and CK2, but for HoI there are way to much units on the map to clutter it with 3D models.
3D models are a must for a RTS, but for HoI Nato counters are the best solution. Paradox can add a 3D model DLC or so for the minority that prefers 3D models.

Yes Nato style counters would be a must I think (I hope). Otherwise we are going to have problems with the Polish Lancers!

I would have thought that people who use NATO counters are in the minority. It may be nice to have the option, especially for the big fronts of ww2 like during fall gelb and barbarossa, but most of the time I would prefer the eye candy of 3d models over boring counters. I won't shed any tears if they are missing, although, it would seem strange not to include them.

No offense, and not trying to rage here, but if that is sarcasm, it's not humorous , and I think this is a valid concern for a lot of us not to be taken lightly. Please give us the professional answer about what is planned, so we can know what to expect. Thank you.

Was that referring to having nato counters on the map or just to using them in the division templates?

I prefer nato Counters on the map at least.

I think it's hillarious.

Podcat and his team do know very well that half their Hearts of Iron Playerbase rather plays with Counters than with Sprites. They just are not ready yet, because the game isn't even in Alpha.

Personally, I think counter-users are a minority. Perhaps it can be one of the stats we track and we'll know for sure.

Why do you think that? All the AARs I read have pictures with counters, most ingame pictures that are posted in the HoI3 forum have counters enabled.

Maybe you could create a poll?

Edit: Almost all mods use an improved version of counters and the submods that add more sprites don't seem very popular at all...

I think counters are more popular than 3D models(it is true that we shouldn't speak of sprites in Clausewitz engine games), at least on the forum, but then I am not sure the forum is representative of the players overall. Most of the players probably never visit the forums, nor do they edit game files or install mods.

The number of players who write AARs are a tiny minority, those who register on the forum are a larger minority. As I said, maybe we'll be able to track this on Steam and know for sure

Besides having counters I think much more important is that, in the combat screen it is also shown which brigades make part of the division. Since na armored division can be anything to a 1 ARM 1 MIL to a 2 ARM 2 MOT TD behemoth. Sure you can hover the mouse but having info at first glance is better.
