I've just started playing this game and I'm getting pretty frustrated at the lack of control I have over my character.

I decided to start slowly and easily to learn the game by playing the Earl of a county. But I've got no control over my character at all. He seems to get dragged all over at the whim of his liege lord without any input from me at all. This is especially frustrating when I keep getting dragged in to the wrong side in civil wars. I know I've got a duty to my Liege but I should be able to refuse, albeit at a serious cost, and anyway, I've also got a duty to my King as well. So if a civil war breaks out I should be able to decide which side to pick, but I never get a choice. I just get dragged in to the side of the rebellion without any input from me at all. Very frustrating and, I might also say, not very historically accurate either.

Am I doing something wrong or is this the way the game plays?

Have you tried joining beneficial factions? If you do not want to be in the same boat sa your liege, you have to join an independence faction created by either you or one of your lieges vassals.

Factions is one of the things I haven't really tried yet. Thanks, I'll give that a go.

Although, I'd have still expected a 'your liege lord calls on your obligations' message with the option to refuse or accept - with the obvious consequences either way.

Ok. So the factions do nothing to resolve my issue. My Liege is joining factions at the Realm level, which I can't interact with because I'm too low level. So he dicides to join the usurpers and I'm automatically in on his side without any involvement from me at all. Is this right? I can't believe that removing all choices from the player can possibly be a design decision.

I'm generally enjoying the game so far, mostly, but this is game breaking for me. Every time a war breaks out the game turns 'hands off' and I'm just along for the ride :(

clearifying ... playing a count in a big kingdom aren't the way to learn the game

regular suscepts for starters would be an independent count/Duke in Ireland (since its fairly isolated) or a country such as Denmark which is small but strong

Yeah, I would try playing as one of the Independent rulers in Ireland. Since it's so divided, most of the rulers there have about the same power so it's fairly easy to take each county one at a time, reunite Ireland and become King.

Well, after reloading a few times and playing through the events again I think I've figured it out.

I was in my liege's council, as Marshal, which makes it understandable that I'd get dragged in to the war on his side immediately.

I tried again, but first resigned my position. When the civil war kicked off I had more freedom. I could either join the rebellion, declare war against my liege or, as I opted to do, swear fealty to the King and fight for the loyalists. I've got my freedom when I'm not a member of My liege's council, although I'm still surprised my liege didn't call on my obligations to him. He merely kept asking for me to be his marshal, which I kept refusing, until I joined the King.

So I've got more freedom than I thought, it's just that certain requirements have to be met first. I thought that manually balancing the UK economy in Victoria 1 was tricky. but this might be even more challenging :)

Just wait till you start breeding children and think you made an awesome heir and he turns out to be a homosexual, and dies of some odd std a few years later :)
