There's no doubt that the air war, aircraft, and the UI for air could use some love, but one thing I don't understand is the '0' zero! lack of control over upgrades. It is impossible to create a specialized version of a particular aircraft and use it exclusively for a squadron and/or detail when it will upgrade and to what it will upgrade. If I make a long range version of a fighter to escort my bombers, I can't make a squadron with those aircraft exclusively. Oh sure, I can initially, but anytime I make a different version, it auto-upgrades. I've even tried making a new version, immediately decommissioning it, and my squadrons will still upgrade to the decommissioned one!!!

Is there a way around this? Are there any mods that give you much more control over this? In earlier versions of HoI, you could control whether or not a unit upgrades its equipment. I guess Paradox decided this was not needed anymore.

Yeah, that's really annoying. As it stands now, we have worst of both worlds.
It has limitations of being able to use only single version of aircraft, because effectively, we do.
It is as complicated as if we had option too choose, because when we create new air group, we are presented with list of dozen, possibly hundreds of aircraft types (if we capitulated some minors earlier and seized their equipment), so we have to find the one that is best. Only for our choice to be reset soon enough.

Ironically toggleable upgrading was a feature in HoI2: DD, AoD, DH and HoI3, but does not exist in HoI4 for some reason.

Well isn't a work around to just not produce the "newer" aircraft until it is better than the old variant?

I can see how this can be a problem. But that's one reason why I personally avoid spending points on range because I know they could get lumped in with a worse model.

The other side of the coin is if you need a wing of 100 planes, the game will fill it. Even if it has to use biplanes.

I do think the Air side could use further development to be a little more like the navy is (more mobile, better AI) and yes have an option for "BF 109 Ausfl. C" only or whatever. The air zones in Europe are pretty small and match national boundaries exactly.

I think if you want escorts, they have Heavy Fighters, which I guess in game terms aren't so great, but they will do the job.

As I said, and I think others know, a lot of useful features, present in the old hoi (and the like) in hoi4, for a mysterious reason have not been removed. Including the smarter AI ... and it's disheartening that in a modern game, the old AI is smarter ...

Is it only specific to a DLC? I have almost all DLC's. I don't have these options on my version.
Just checked: still there with all DLCs disabled. Would be a dick move on PDS part to make it a part of DLC.

Edit: have to create a new wing or press "reorganize" button to get to that menu - just to make sure you're looking in the right place.

Is there a way around this?

As somebody above already pointed out, you can achieve that effect by using the air wing reinforce settings. Admittedly, it could be a bit more comfortable (if you could directly choose an aircraft type, rather than achieve that effect by selecting between new/old type settings). But it allows you to achieve the effect you desire. There's enough real problems with the game to complain about, there's no reason to rant about problems that don't exist.
