I really dislike the idea of a galaxy being so small and was wondering if its possible to play in a cluster of a galaxy? Would make the game more realistic to me.

Maybe hyperlanes have a finite distance before they become unstable which means certain parts of the galaxy are cut off from each other.

Basically i would like to be able to generate a little part of a galaxy with lots of stars, is this possible?

So if I'm understanding this right, instead of playing in a badly scaled galaxy with only 1000 stars or less, you'd rather play in a star cluster in a much larger, but largely inaccessible galaxy?

Well, for starters, I suppose you'd be a bit more limited on how the playable map was shaped. It could either look like part of the arm of a spiral, with most stars looking like a long, curved blob, or the simple blob of an elliptical. There would also have to be an in-game reason for why you can't go to other parts of the galaxy. And on that note, how would you deal with the possibility of someone expanding to another cluster through sublight means (Those nomads could have a new origin), or making contact with those outside your corner of the galaxy?

EDIT: Because if you had a full, or mostly full galaxy, that could cause performance issues.
Maybe if you were in a dwarf galaxy, it would be easier to scale, with the background of a larger galaxy in the distance. But still, that's a lot of stars you're talking about.

Having the "galactic map" just be the tip of a galactic arm would be interesting. The milky way is after all a hundred million times bigger than a 1000 star galaxy so the very edge of the tip of the smallest spiral arm might very well be only a thousand stars or less.

We might also be in a super-tiny galaxy like Segue 2 which actually has a thousand stars in it, though such a galaxy ought to have a traversable center.

That would be needless, but I do like the idea of creating alternate galaxy maps. Currently we only have elliptical, ring, and two types of spiral. I figure that we could maybe add some kind of fractal pattern.

Yea just more galaxy shapes would be good with no centre.

If we played on 1000 star portion of the galaxy you could also add some really fun events from other parts of the galaxy. And if performance gets really good in the future make wormholes add another map to the playthrough with new species.

But i would be happy with a 1000 star slice of the galaxy...
