They are included in the "recon battalion". And as buildable Equipment I assume they included in "Support Equipment". So maybe no buildable armored cars.
But I'm not sure. Definately a Point to mod in :rolleyes:

Just make the armored cars as buildable unit for all recon battallions. They are use for infantry divisions same way as for armored divisions.
Maybe the numbers needed could vary

I don't think they are needed as a buildable unit. I would expect to see Recon level 2 have a requirement for motorized equipment. I think Motorized + Support equipment captures the armored car role.

But now, recon Units have a real Impact, so this is now better than in Hoi3.
So it's a Little bit wired.
Armored cars were in Hoi3, but don't have the values and Impact to the game, so not really necessery.
Now, recon has more purpose, but armored cars are not in the game anymore....:eek::rolleyes:o_O

Yeah I don't think we need armored cars as their own buildable unit. HoI3 had that and it was hardly ever used, even by the AI.

It would be a nice addition now that we have battalion-sized units as divisional components. Armored recon Bats with 8-rads, halftracks or similar were real beasts late-war with tremendous mobility and firepower. A motorized Infantry Regiment with an armored Recon Battalion would provide a lot tougher breakthrough and attack-stats than one without one.

Also it makes a larger relative impact in less prominent theaters such as Africa or Asia where heavier infantry battalions with integrated AT are less common.

1940 German Infantry recon:
d. Reconnaissance Battalion
The reconnaissance battalion of the infantry division consists of a headquarters, a communications platoon, a horse troop, a bicycle troop and a heavy weapons company.
(1) Horse Troop
The horse troop consists of a headquarters, three platoons of three squads each and a heavy machine-gun section. Weapons are nine light machine guns and two heavy machine guns.
(2) Bicycle Troop
The bicycle troop is organized along the same lines as the horse troop. Weapons are nine light machine guns, three light mortars and two heavy machine guns. The troop contains a proportion of motorcycles.

Later: The reduction from nine infantry battalions to six was partly alleviated by the substitution of a Fü:silier battalion for the old reconnaissance unit. The Füilier battalion, still charged with reconnaissance duties, was organized like a rifle battalion except that one company was equipped with bicycles and the unit had slightly more horse-drawn vehicles and some motor transport. In practice the Füsilier battalion came to be reckoned as a seventh rifle battalion.

That's German line infantry. Not even soviet or paras, marines, mountain etc

Yeah my idea of an armoured car is a wheeled vehicle with light armor and some gun on top. Mechanized infantry would be infantry driven around and supported by APCs (half tracks and the like). I hate to keep invoking HOI3 but mech infantry was it's own category in that game.

It's an interesting game design choice. Is it better to abstract them into another group (e.g motorized or mechanised)? Or should they be their own thing?

If they are their own thing, they add more research, more things to produce, and more things to consume resources when being built.

Personally, I don't have a problem with them being abstracted into another category, and I built ARM/MOT/AC/AC standard armored divisions in HOI3 for some nations.

It would be a simple addition that when you add recon support companies to your Division they will have a inventory list. Add a line of recon vehicles, mod the recon companies to accept those into inventory that boost their stats. Why not? It would add something more deeper than just researching Recon 1 > Recon 2 > Recon 3.

Given that support equipment include stuff like jeeps, having a whole separate equipment only for recon support battalion seems way over the top.

Players should be able to go four ways with their recon squadrons:

1. Trucks (ex. LRDG)
2. Halftracks
3. Armored cars
4. Light tanks

Each of these would then give different costs (trucks are far cheaper than tanks), offense, defense, and speed statistics. For example an all-truck recon battalion might have problems finding out information as soon as it runs into an enemy line. Whereas an armored car or light tank unit might be able to "punch through" deeper to see further back into an enemy's rear area and get more details.

It would just seem to be a shame that they'd have all these cool trees for tanks, but not for armored cars.

Yeah I don't think we need armored cars as their own buildable unit. HoI3 had that and it was hardly ever used, even by the AI.

AC were an awesome brigade in TFH. Hardly ever used? I know plenty of people that used them regularly.

There's nothing like watching a LARM/MOT/AC/AC division running around at 13 kph in open terrain. And maximum fun was running faster ARM divisions using AC instead of SPART.
