Static counters, designed for use on a tabletop wargame, have no place in a real time game. The reason wargame counters look the way they do is the limitations placed upon them by the fact that they are static and printed on physical cardboard.
Joking? Because of limitations? It is about immersion.
The new look/feel of the game destroys most, if not all, immersion for me. The new "symbol-boxes" with the sprites (how incredible stupid and annoying it is too see them run/walk/shoot/pushups) just destroys any immersion in my opinion. Kids today might not remember, but they resemble some tiny toy-soldiers in plastic I used to play with as a kid. To me, in my opinion, they are a huge disappointment.
However, I believe I have read you CAN turn off the models, perhaps not through options alone, but in a sort of mini-mod/text file or something. I won't play with the sprites/models, and I am not alone. I bet there will be mods out on day one to both scale the sprites and turn them off altogether.
My hope:
DLC from day one (or shortly) with normal counters and NATO symbols. Down the line, perhaps even a DLC with German symbols (for playing Germany) - and a flat / topographic map, that resembles a map, with modes to see weather/supply etc. I would easily pay just as much for that as for the base game.
