It would be nice to be able to switch from the sprites to 2d icons or counter. I just find the single sprite represention with animations, jokey and the wrong feeling for such a grand strategy game. The graphics are more akin to a recent civilization title. There is so much about hoi that's about using your imagination- its the fantasy of marshalling thousands of troops and vechiles. There is something dumbed down about the use of sprites. I'm all for improved functionality just give us the option to keep it more old school. There would be a better sense of realism with 2d icons or counters.

Look I have been around the counter/no counter argument since the beginning.

For many it is an emotional things, so there is no point is arguing which is batter or best & why. I do think there will be more people who like the models more then the counters, but many will still want the counters.

he he, been 2 years of it , For the majors I'll take advantage of all of the commander slots and Theatre Groups + Naming to make up for the info lost from the OOB until a mod shows up

It's called 3d models, sprites are 2d images.
If you want a "counter" to work optimally you will need a straight top view without perspective, currently when you zoom in hoi4 the camera gives you a slight tilted perspective view.
Unless you will be able to mod the viewport camera itself, you will most likely have to rely on 3d counters if you really dislike the infantry/tank models.

Static counters, designed for use on a tabletop wargame, have no place in a real time game. The reason wargame counters look the way they do is the limitations placed upon them by the fact that they are static and printed on physical cardboard.

Joking? Because of limitations? It is about immersion.

The new look/feel of the game destroys most, if not all, immersion for me. The new "symbol-boxes" with the sprites (how incredible stupid and annoying it is too see them run/walk/shoot/pushups) just destroys any immersion in my opinion. Kids today might not remember, but they resemble some tiny toy-soldiers in plastic I used to play with as a kid. To me, in my opinion, they are a huge disappointment.

However, I believe I have read you CAN turn off the models, perhaps not through options alone, but in a sort of mini-mod/text file or something. I won't play with the sprites/models, and I am not alone. I bet there will be mods out on day one to both scale the sprites and turn them off altogether.

My hope:
DLC from day one (or shortly) with normal counters and NATO symbols. Down the line, perhaps even a DLC with German symbols (for playing Germany) - and a flat / topographic map, that resembles a map, with modes to see weather/supply etc. I would easily pay just as much for that as for the base game.

I will be so happy when wargaming arrives in the 21st century and doesn't try to be as bland as can be, because it has to recreate a tabeltop wargame from the 70ies. It's like rebuilding a car from 1902 over and over in exactly the same fashion, just with modern technology - it simply makes no sense to me to not use a modern design and the possibilities we have nowadays..

I think they made a gread job with the look of HOI4. What really throws me out of my immersion are... NATO-Counters. When I play a wargame I want to see Panzers and Soldiers. Is this silly? I don't know, if you play with NATO-counters it is still the same game I will play.

I mod NATO symbols out of every wargame I buy. If I know I can't mod them out I don't buy the game.

That DLC has to be a mod anyway. If they had wanted a flat topographic map they had done it.

People get so emotional about these little counters. In Hoi3 I used the nato style because honestly, the 3d models were ugly and they gave less information. However I like the new 3d models in Hoi4 and the mini counter is far more informative then a nato counter for the most people. Nato counters are confusing if you are not a military enthusiast.

Anyways I think this will be sorted out by modders.

What's not new are arguments about counters and models - I reckon we'll be having them until HoI5, lol :p.

Would have been original if they kept things flat but used OS type map and use the height contours lines so with the new shadow system night/day animation you could see elevations, depressions, forest etc from their changing shadow as the sun passes overhead.
Then really nice 2d icons or updated counters and add all the new improvements of extra info. They could have got some nice ideas from the likes of Francesco's mod.
