Most people play with minor nations so which minor nation is your favorite?

For me it is Morroco.

The best minor is Brandenburg: good monarchs (especially after 1640), good generals (especially after 1630's), a few good provinces (Brandenburg, Magdenburg), a threatening location but full of expansion possibilities.

Imho the definition of minor is rather relative : Portugal is rather small, with just 4 or 5 provinces at start. Venice is about the same size at start, but lacks the initial flow of explorers and colonists.

I must admit I rather take a liking to every nation, major or minor, I have played thus far. The combination of size, position, colonists, explorers and leaders makes every game special and poses its own unique challenges.

The risk style of play (conquer! kill! annex! conquer! kill! annex!) appeals less to me than an economic / peaceful style of play. I feel this makes all nations blend into the same pattern.

I liked the Mughals when I played them (just finished them, report to follow). I am also liking Venice, and when I played the Netherlands in the age of Commercialism I liked them too.

I hope to play France, Sweden among the majors somewhere in the future.
Among the minors, Oman is attracting my attention after a recent issue of the national geographic. Or perhaps Morocco.

Oman has a low pop, low manpower and is quite poor really, but they have a big navy and a COT. they can also go either Shiite or Sunni. Shiite might be appealing as you get a colonist, but then Sunni Aden next door has a much bigger army. You dont want them cross. Persia has its own problems and is rich so they are the obvious target. but they can crush you easily if they put their mind to it.

they strike me as very challenging. check them out; i tried once, but was unlucky versus the persians and so got nowhere.

I agree with CitizenPaul. Each nation is unique. Spain and France were great tutorials and so is each other nation I end up playing. I am leaning towards the more diplomatic stratergies as I play the smaller weaker nations that really depend on alliances to cover my butt. Currently I'm playing Brandenburg and my stratergies are paying off. Only been in three wars to date 1571. One a minor skirmish when war was declared on an ally. The other two I started to gain back provinces that showed my shield. I'm ranked #4 and getting stronger:).

Hey Vel, I hear when EU3 comes out that Lorraine will be omitted.....no one wants to play that nation.

I can't wait for EUIII. I won't betray EUI to EUII, but maybe to EUIII. Or maybe I won't, I don't know. If Yoghurt goes to EUIII I might stay and lobby for the Sole Defender title.

Don't worry, Vel, maybe they'll add Lorraine as an option like free Ireland or something.;)

Them Mughals ... sweet :D

I've just finished a Mughal-game. They almost play like a major. being sunni, they easily dominate Asia and all it's rich spice & oriental provinces. This makes for an incredibly rich, and therefore powerful, country.

I ended up with most of Asia and considerable holdings in Europe and South America (thank you Spain for banning my traders).

Tried playing the aztecs recently ... quit in 1496

I'm still new to the game(ie haven't played alot of nations yet) but I did enjoy Brandenburg. I restarted Brandenburg 3 times but that wasn't because I liked it that much. The first time I tried using the "get five loans and don't pay it back routine". It made the game to easy so I quit that one.
