I don't think Tokugawa flag should be used at all, after all it was just a symbol of one family. Most of the troops in Nippon wouldn't have stood behind that symbol, some of them even woud have rather fought against it. So I'd say Emperor's symbol would be a better choice.

Aetius: Did the Japanese have a navy to have a flag in the 1850's? I thought they got their first bigger-than-boat ships in the late 1860's.

What about the flag used in the WWII with the red stripes? When was in taken into use and why?

The earlier ships that the hinomaru flag was used on were merchant shipping and smaller ships. :)

This flag ? It is the Japanese naval flag, and was introduced in 1889. It is still used today by the Japanese navy.

There should be events that change the flags as they did historically. The only problem that I could see with that is the US flag. Unless they come up with a way to recognize certain areas as states, that will be a problem. Especially if the US claims more states than currently in the nation.

They ordered a number of ships with instructors from the Dutch once Perry opened the country. They didn't build decent ships on their own until later of course. The alot of the ship building was conducted by the Daimyo who were pretty independent, I would guess this the main reason for deciding on a "national" naval flag

Oh, I see. You speak of those ships. I was bringing up the merchant ships that had hinomaru flag. :D

The Emperor's flag should be used untill the Meiji restoration.

P.S. You have no idea how hard it was to resist posting a Kenshin pic. :D i guess banning really gets results.

You have the crest of the imperial house, the crest of the Tokugawa house and the hinomaru. The Imperial house crest fits on the "shield" of Japan, but the hinomaru is probably best to use as a flag.
