Greetings all.
I have an idea to split Nippon up into several clan factions, as (if memory recalls) Japan had not formed into one, around 1419. Therefor by uniting all the clans you form Nippon (you see?), however one is having trouble finding any facts or history, can anyone point me in the right direction PLEEEEEEASE!
Yours
A.

It depends on what you define as united. The Ashikaga Shogunate still ruled the country, however, it was almost as weak as the emperor and the daimyos rarely took notice of it. If you started a scenario later on where Nihon was in the midst of the Onin War then you could break it up into several countries

Ayeshteni, did you get this started yet? :)

The info you gave was MOST useful. I am working on it but VERY slowly. I have been diverted by AGC to come up with events on strategic trading straits.

HOWEVER, any progress I make will be posted here!!:)

Will hope to progress soon. I have scoured books on 'world history' and military history, most are unfortunately Eurocentric. But I do have some little gems:)

I Will keep in touch;)
A.

P.S. I wish the Emperor a good birthday.

Ah, I am glad I helped! :) Yes, please tell us of your progress. And, if you need any more information, just ask me.. :)

PS: It is now Emperor Akihito's birthday! (In Japan time ;) ) :) I am sure he respects your wishes of a happy birthday. ;)

Wasn't Japan technically united under the shogun but the daimyos were fighting each other and the ronin to become shogun?

Well, yes, in a way.. You see, the first power struggle of the such was in the Gempei Wars, between the Heike (Taira) and Genji (Minamoto) clans in the 12th century AD. The Heike, under the great Kiyomori, gained much power and influence during the Hogen and Heiji wars. The Genji, however, built up their forces and stuck at the Heike, eliminating them at Dan-no-Ura, and their leader Minamoto Yoritomo taking the title of Seii Taisyougun.

The Hojo, a family closely related to the Genji, took control from the Genji soon after. The Hojo ruled through the 13th century, and were actually the Shoguns that defeated the Mongols, under Kublai Khan, in 1274 and 1281.

The Ashikaga Bakufu (Shogunate) soon took control, as the Hojo Bakufu became quite weakened from the Mongols.

The Ashikaga were powerful earlier on in their reign. However, they did not do a good job monitoring the daimyo of Japan. So, throughout the years, the Daimyo became more and more powerful. It was the Onin War, which ended in the city of Kyoto being destroyed, that is often used to mark the end of the Muramachi Era.

So, soon Japan became torn apart in large civil wars for about 100 years. At the time, the Ashikaga Shoguns still supposedly ruled over the country. But, the daimyo were more powerful.

The Shogun later became a kind of "puppet" of Oda Nobunaga. But, the Shogun did not trust him, and so allied with enemies of Nobunaga. The Oda then defeated them and marched on Kyoto.

So, it was at about the time of Nobunaga that the Ashikaga Bakufu died out. But, they had little power before. It will be very fun to be able to play the different clans. :D Perhaps events should be made about the Shogun in this scenario, to show that they are there.. Could random Nippon Clan events be made for having to pay tribute to the Shogun or something?

The Tokugawa's united Japan, and ruled it better than the Ashikaga's, in the way of monitoring the daimyo. Thus, the Tokugawa Bakufu did not fall due to increasingly rich and powerful daimyo. The Tokugawa's monitored the amount of retainers that each daimyo had, as well as the marriage of a daimyo (To ensure he did not make powerful alliances with other daimyo), the size of the daimyo's castle, among other things. The size of a daimyo's army and castle's allowed sizes were set according to the amount of koku (wealth, measured in rice) they had.

Any of you guys played Shogun? That game really opened my eyes to the Sengoku Jidai period (am I correct in using that term?), but obviously, it must be a greatly simplified game, like EU2 is at times.

In 1419 Japan was split in 3 Bakufus (shogunates); the Daimyos were sort of under this but it is impossible to represent this in the game without a few more provinces, so I think the 1419 situation is probably best represented with these Bakufus
One based on Kyushu (controlled Kyushu)
One based in Kansai (controlled Kansai and Shikoku (based in Kyoto))
One Based in Kanto (controlled Kanto and Tohoku (based in Kamakura))
The Kansai Bakufu had the other two in a sort vassal relationship

The leader of the Kanto Bakufu fought a war against the Kansai Bakufu sometime in the middle of the 1450's (it's an event in game).

Later this system disintegrated, obviously.
