Nicknames, how do I get them?

Taking a quick look at the wiki, I noticed there were quite a few nicknames I had never seen or gotten in game. I was wondering if some of them had special requirements and what those requirements were but also, I believe some of them are likely hard coded to appear on certain people and may not have any requirements. Like the lionheart nickname or the confessor.

Anyone have any ideas on how you go about acquiring certain nicknames?
"X the devil" or "X the dragon" sound pretty cool.

Devil and Dragon both need 10 years on the throne plus the Wroth trait and at least one trait from Excommunicated, Kinslayer, and Impaler.

Nicknames are given to independent dukes or above. As long as you're a vassal, they won't appear.

i just had a byz duke get named "the wise" while still under control of the empire. are you sure they have to be independent?

That's what it says in the file itself. "Independent dukes, kings and emperors only".
I do see some vassal dukes get them, but I guess that's while they're temporarily independent during a civil war.

Well, they won't appear without external triggering. You can get "the Great" and its Piety-based equivalent by satisfying ambitions while still a vassal.

The problem I've found is often with the time requirements - by the time you're eligible for a given nickname, you'll already have been plastered with a different one. From what I've seen 'the Wise' is a particularly bad offender for this, especially if you've been practicing careful breeding. In fact, it's so bad I usually just decide what nickname my ruler should have, then console it in >.>

It does seem like I'm always "the wise". I think I'll have to start consoling my nicknames from now on.

What would be nice is to have a popup with a yes/no choice when you can acquire a nickname so that you could actually hold out for something else.

The basic factor is the "weight" of the nickname in the game's decision-making process. The factor in a "modifier" entry multiplies the weight of the nickname if you meet the conditions specified in the modifier.

I could have sworn that I've seen independent Dukes receive nicknames. I'll have to keep an eye on this from now on.

'The Ill-Ruler' is another big offender. I've seen so many characters get this one, especially a lot of mine, the thing is though....few of them are obvious bad rulers.

Often I'll have characters have great traits, all in green, and nothing obvious wrong with the kingdoms, but these great kings will still get 'The ill-ruler' attached to them for no apparent reason.

Ill-Ruler requires you to be Arbitrary, which is usually a bad trait to have.

I just got my duchess "the just" nickname while in an independence war. I immediately lost, but I was a vassal duke with a nickname for about a week before I died.

Seems like I still get saddled with it more often than not... oh well, at least King Tariku the Great deserved it. Man crowned himself King of Jerusalem and was the first Nubian King to actually fend off the Ilkhanate, and then push back against them. Truly the most awesome ruler I've had in that game, and nearly any game.


But I've had a "The Dragon" with one of my Shahanshah's of Persia, been "The Cruel" more than a few times, and another contender for my favorite ruler ever was the Breton Queen of Wales, Queen Hodierne "The Gentle"... who was the nicest, most kind person alive... so long as you weren't Muslim, as she was a true Zealot and a key player in our efforts to aid with the Reconquista.

My current ruler is King Solomon "The Unready" of Nubia... figure that has to do with some combination of him being Slothful, Arbitrary, and Wroth. Despite his poor traits, he's been a somewhat successful king thanks to his policy of finding any excuse possible to imprison his Dukes. But hey, I've been overdue for a dickish tyrant of a King to help curb some of my stronger vassals. Last two Kings were both Content, and thus ineligible to plot to revoke titles... Solomon hasn't had that issue.

"The Unready" is identical in every regard to "Ill-Ruler". The AI is very, very bad at keeping the "Arbitrary" trait off its characters.

But it is never the person who chooses their nickname. It always one of your 'mates' and the story usually starts "We were pissed as a cricket and.........."

I love trying to get a whole set of rulers in a row with different nicknames, without passing over any rulers without one.

I had a string of Muslim rulers that were in order: The Great, The Able, The Wise, The Strong and The Kind. Then the chain broke with another The Great.

My Welsh game had The Cruel, The Wise, The Just and The Chaste before I received another The Just.

My most recent game as Portuguese Leon is doing well though. Thus far we have Duarte I "the Fat", Paio I "the Wise", Duarte II "the Kind" (who was queer and missed a great opportunity for that particular moniker) and most recently Duarte III "the Blessed" who assassinated his older brother almost as soon as he came of age so he could inherit the throne. He became "Blessed" after the pope absolved him of the Kinslayer trait.... Unfortunately before I got to play as him he named his son Duarte too so I'm headed straight for Duarte IV though as long as I keep getting unique nicknames I'm happy.
